Well, this is my 2nd post here but I've decided to have my trial by fire. Might as well get my initiation over with. Lol

I wrote a song that I wanted to sound a lot like a late 70's-early 80's style anthem. It transitions from quasi-acoustic type ballad to an angry metal mash-well at least that's the idea. I've had a lot of mixed reviews about this song including the allusions to some lyric ideas from Jackson Brown and Led Zepplin in the song. I really wasn't trying to steal anything but as I wrote this (the music came first), the lyric flow just came to me and this is what I came up with. I ask that you please listen at this song with a critical ear in regards to the music, lyrics and the recording. I really hated my voice in this song-I had someone else in mind when I wrote it and I know I need to remix the harmony part. This is still a work in progress. Listen at this song over at www.soundclick.com/bands/2/musicallymrmmusic.htm

There will be a brief description of the songs and they are posted either in hi or lo fi streams and mp3 downloads. Feel free to listen at whatever you like while there but I really want some input on that song. Thanks forum. Give it to me straight! (o, God-what did I just ask for?) lol

This track has a really nice classic rock vibe to it! I like the composition as it progresses from the mellow parts through to the fuller middle section and the wonderful guitar solo work that was exhibited in the middle of the song and at the end that faded out.

I am hearing a ton of grittiness on the sound and it might be from one of the distorted rhythm guitars that is making the mix sound as if everything is badly clipping when in fact, I suspect it's just that one guitar.

The drum programing was excellent on this piece but the sound of the kit sounds real synthetic. Invest in some better samples or what ever method you use to obtain your drum sounds. The talent of playing them merits the purchase.

As for your vocals; Your voice is not as bad as you seem to feel it is. You have a strong set of pipes that can sing in tune and communicate all the lyrics with very good clarity. I think you have to learn to really let go and belt out the chorus like the way the guitar screams from the soul, your vocal has to equal that emotional level too. It would probably be best if you didn't sing during the lead guitar's first solo and didn't compete with it in the arrangement.

Beyond that, I think you have a good sound and one worth developing to its fullest potential with the right equipment and the time and dedication it requires. Your voice is good and you just have to get more comfortable with it and I think you will achieve good things with it.

Thanks for sharing!

Cheers! :)

Thanks Ghost for the kind words and encouraging comments. The more I listen to this track, I kind of feel what you are saying about the drums. I'm in the process of remixing this track with a live drum track (coming through a Mackie mixer, mike'd with Sm 57's) I am also deleting that first solo so the focus can be on the vocal. That segment of the song wound up being a little more busy than I wanted it to be. I just had so many ideas going on in my head until it came out that way. This particualar track was done completely on a Tascam 424, Alesis Nanoverb and a Behringer Compressor. Going back and cleaning up a few places will really tighten up this mix I hope.

Very interesting voice. I like the singers voice. I guess the quality i'd give it is rich.

I'm getting the mix just breaking up a bit in certain spots. It has a nice high level in overall terms but i think in a few spots things started to distort.

Jack Black?

You should send it to him, I'm sure he's working on bringing the early 70's style goth rock thing back for gen x.
Now, is that YOU singing?
Whoever it is has a GOOD vocal.
I'm listening on LOFI and it still sounds pretty good.
IMO:)

I did the vocals, and all the instruments on this one.

Jack Black doing a 70's revival for us genx'ers? lol School Of Rock rocks on. My kids in my class have to see that movies for an extra credit assignment :)

thanks for the comments fellas.

Welcome to the board!

I think you have a good voice that really fits this tune well. Yes, it does kind of have that late 70's, early 80's vibe ... actually, some of it kind of reminds me of Queensryche (hope I spelled that right)

Some very nice playing there too. Have to agree about the drum sound, though. That is what is holding this one back, but it is good to hear that you are re-tracking this with the real thing. That is going to make a 100% difference, and this thing is really going to fly.

Some good chops there. Very nicely done!

Looking forward to hearing some more from you in the future.

:D

p.s. School of Rock is an excellent film! :)
