Led Zeppelin sounding overheads?

What paired overheads under $500 would get me closest to a natural sounding drum sound like that of John Bonham from Led Zeppelin. BTW, the drummer i am going to be micing plays like John Bonham and wants to sound like him.

Ive heard good things about Studio Projects c4 and Oktava mk 012, but have never used either.

I'm sure someone here will know have a lot of info about his sound, but I'm afraid that whatever overheads you select will probably have little to do with it. His drums, how he tuned them, how he played them, etc. matters more than the mics. Second, the room is a big part of his sound. If you find drums and a room that sound like him, it will be a lot easier to record what is already there.

Don't take this the wrong way ...

but it has less to do with the microphones than it has to do with the fact that many of John Bonham's tracks were recorded in a castle owned by Jimmy Page. I read all about it. They used mostly room miking techniques. If you want a huge sounding Bonham drum track, I would suggested a huge room - like a gymnasiam, concert hall or church cathedral.

Pop down to "Whatever Works" and ask Terry Manning (compasspnt), since he was the producer for at least one of the LZ albums. Find out what he used for overheads, and I can probably advise you on a cheaper mic with some of the same characteristics.

you may already do this, but I would agree with trying some ambient miking this may be the key to getting the sound you want.

Do all the close kit miking like normal and then set up an xy pair 10 feet of the kit or so,, a big room that isn't completely damped is ideal.

The hardest part is getting the room, which includes a place to put the guitar and bass cabs to keep them out of the drum tracks and vice versa......... and owning a castle,,,,, and getting the neumann U67s to use as ambient mics
