I am mixing at my house using Vegas 3.0 and am wondering this: Should I leave some room for mastering in my mix? Do I want to get it close to pusing 0db? If not, what should I shoot for?

Thanks.

I've always wondered the same thing, before I use ozone, my mastering program, should I bring the mix up to clipping? I have found that the less I the loudness maximizer in ozone has to work, the better the mix sounds, if I get past one third of the maximum setting it just doesnt sound the same. So I've realized it makes the most sense to get your main mix as close to zero as possible.

Though I would make sure that everything is clearly below zero, dont turn it up just a bit and risk clipping, I found I used to do this.

You should always get your mixes hot unless you happen to find a sweet spot with your mixer (if you use one) that is a little low.

There is no reason to really leave any room but it's a good idea to go easy on any bus compression because chances are the mastering house has better compresors and limiters than you.

If you are doing it all yourself than do whatever gives you the best final product.
