Leave the settings alone.

We get the settings to how we like them, and a minute or two later, they sound naff. We boost xxHz a bit more until we like it again, and a minute or two later, we don't like it. Again. Or we keep going until the 'right' sound sticks. We break, listen back later, and it sounds naff.

Leave it how it is and do something else, the quieter the better. Your hearing has adjusted itself to deal with the incoming sounds. Take a break and go back.

Or we love the way it sounds loud and mix to that level. Listen back later and naffness again, as our hearing has, again, self-adjusted.

Listen at a level that would let you hear someone talking to you. That will keep your hearing from twiddling its own settings. Making it sound good loud will lead to naffness at lower volume. Mixing to sound good at lower levels will make it amazing when louder.

The same goes for finding that awesome guitar tone.
