I'm thinking of experimenting with this idea. Take the dry DI bass signal out of my rig into a bass amp, then mic it from a distance with an LDC, in my case a Rode NT2-a. I tried this up close with an AKG D112 but the sound was close to identical. This will surely add room to the sound....has anybody tried this?

Also, when I reamp, do I reamp the dry signal, and not the DI track with compression and EQ added?

First the obligatory 'it depends out of the way and it would depend hugely on the sound scape you have in mind -big and open perhaps?

Usually here I'm trying to keep a good tight dry bass and the mic is close and doing alt tone to the DI. Even close up they're still more alive, resonant and colorful than a DI. -Small-to med. treated home size rooms here. Maybe with a really nice bigger room?

yep. i never kept the DI when i had access to a 4047 though as i never got the two lined up right...

a few feet back from a 15" ampeg cab in a kind crappy room was usually pretty stunning on the bottom. i always had to boost the mids a little for cut.

some pals of mine do great bass tracks "at home" with a close mic on the amp...a mic in the room...and a mic micing the strings. they go to three tracks and then bounce it over to one. very "baby you're a rich man."

when i reamp...er...radial...i use an uneffected DI whenever possible.
