I'm finding that in just about every situation, any large diaphragm condenser will beat the pants off of the 57 on grille.

Anyone else noticing the same thing, or is it just me?

No...

...but an LDC on the back of the cab and a 57 or M160 on the front works excellently for me!

Well, my son is recording a band right now and he reports that the sound of the Studio Projects B1 on a Mesa amp thru a 4x12 Marshall cab with Celestion Greenbacks is positively stunning.

He's actually using the B1 right at the grill, and a Shure AM-57 on another speaker in the cab and blending the two channels. He described the sound as "awesome".

Hi chessrock!

No it isn't just you--I love the sound of LDC [and also SDCs too] on the grillcloth of a guitar amp! Alan Parsons always used the smaller Neumann 84s for amplifiers. He didn't use SM-57s at all for guitar amps. If I have to use a dynamic it will be the Beyer or the 421 combined with an ATM29HE. Have you taken the 29HE for a spin yet? That mic eats SM- 67s for breakfast lunch & dinner IMO. However, lotsa people dig the 67s on guitar amps--I use em for snares only.;)

That's really interesting. So much to like about Parsons . . . I never got in to Floyd's sound quite as much under Ezrin.

I think I've used the atm29he live a couple of times. Don't remember what my impressions were. I'll have to keep an eye on that one.

As soon as I've started using LDC vocal mics, I'm not working nearly as hard getting them (guitar) to sound the way I want them. It just seems like now, all I have to do is have the guitarist tweak his amp and we're set. What's coming out of it is what's going to disk.

Thought I might share that with anyone else who might have the idea in their head that not using "the 57 against the grille" is some sort of punishable offense. :D The good thing is that if you have a nice vocal mic, you're probably not using it untill after you track everything else, so it's not like you have to buy a new mic or anything.

I highly advise anyone to give it a shot.

for jazz guitar (Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, etc.) i never use a 57. I use either a Royer 121, Lawson L47, or AT 4060 about 6-12 inches from the grill.
