SOUND DIAGNOSIS

New member
I have researched a number of the "china syndrome" LD vocal condenser offerings and would like some learned opinions on what I perhaps should purchase. This one mic will be used on a male vocals for a demo to be produced in a home studio environment. I've read a few great reviews about the Studio Projects C1. However, I did gag a bit when I read that the perception of the midrange freq's were "scooped" out in two of these reviews, and have actually noticed this in a downloaded wavefile of someone doing a side-by-side with a Rode Nt1000 with vocals at varied distances. I am prepared to spend upwards of 300-500 buckeroos for this tool. Any suggestions? Anybody with ADK usage experience?? Thanks in advance -----ROB

Hi SD,

For $300 to $500, I'd check out the Studio Projects C-3 (skip the C-1 if you can afford $349 for the C-3), the Rode NTK, the GT AM62, the Shure KSM32, and the AT 4047 or 4050; and don't forget the good dynamic mics in that price range too, including the EV RE20, Sennheiser 421 and 441, and Shure SM7b.

Mine is *not* a learned opinion -- this is just intended as a list to get you started in your research.

Welcome to homerecording.com!

Best wishes,

Mark H.

Thanks for the reply Mark! Would I be needing the MEEK VCQ3 with the C3?? ---ROB

Rob,

The C-3 deserves the best microphone preamp you can afford to put behind it.

If you've got some time before making your final purchase decision, and if you're seriously considering the Studio Projects line, then I'd suggest you send an email to Alan Hyatt with your name and address, and he'll send you a copy of their "Sessions" CD (without charge), on which you can hear both mixes and dry vocal tracks recorded with the C-1, C-3 and T-3, recorded through five different preamps (only one of which is a JoeMeek product).

There is also much good information to consider on this board, which you can access by doing a search on any of the mics you are considering. If your situation is such that you cannot listen before you buy, then it's best to read as many people's opinions as possible first, especially noting the experience of those who are writing.

Other resources that I've found useful as a beginner to recording are the mic and preamp comparison discs available from 3DAudioinc.com. While mic and preamp shootout recordings have obvious limitations, they can nevertheless be useful both as ear training and to narrow (or expand) the list of microphones you'd like to audition further.

Generally speaking (with regard to posting here), the more specific information that you can provide about yourself, your experience, your other equipment, and your vocal style, range and the types of music you sing, the more likely that more experienced posters than myself will be able to give you more useful and specific feedback.

Best wishes,

Thanks alot Mark for your informative and apparently well learned words of advice. I just purchased a MXL V67 for 99 bucks and this will be a good start for me. Search you say??? Man, I searched so much that I could even tell Alan Hyatt what kind of underwear he wore on his honeymoon.

Thanks again for your time in responding. All you guys are absoulutely the friggin best. ----ROB
