lcd monitor setup questions

Hi all- I was looking into getting a lcd monitor and wondered if there are any definative features that I should be shopping for. (contrast ratio, etc.) I am also considering one of those trick looking vesa mount compatible arm setups and wondered if anyone has this type of thing in their set up. thanks in advance.
