Layering Tracks

I was wondering what does layering a track mean? Or is there a Thread that anyone can refer me to so I can better understand this? Thanks for any and all help.

Basically, if you record three of the same vocal tracks and add them together, together, you're "layering" vocals.

Same with guitars or anything else. Plain & simple.

And if you layer 60 or 70 vocals together, you get a Def Leppard album.

And .... on the same token, if you record multiple takes in which you use bits and pieces of the different takes to create a new track or replace the bits and pieces of an existing track .... this is what you do when you "comp" a track. Often used for vocal tracks that don't seem to get nailed completely in any one of the takes, but when pieced together can yield the one that gets printed.
