Lavry vs. Apogee converters

I'm trying to decide between these two converters here but just can't seem to make a decision. The concensus seems to be that the Lavry's are very transparent so you're not going to get any coloration. What you hear is what you get. The Apogee converters seem offer a slight coloration. That's the only difference I can find between them...oh and the price.

I'm looking at getting 16 channels of A/D conversion and 2 channels of D/A conversion. If I go all Lavry (Blue) to cover these needs, my total would be roughly $10,000. If I were to go all Apogee to cover these needs then my total would be roughly $6500 and I would be getting 14 extra channels of D/A if I got the DA-16X.

Also, is there any truth to staying with the same company for both A/D and D/A or could I mix and match such as using Lavry for the A/D and Apogee for the D/A?

If anyone can share some opinions or experience on this I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

Here's my take -

"Colored" A-D converters are fine *IF* the converters that you're monitoring with are as transparent as possible - so you can hear whatever color they have.

To that end, I use Lavry converters for the most part either way, but for recording, I just use whatever suits me best at the time (including Apogee), always monitoring through the Lavry.

Thanks for the advice Massive. I was wondering though. Since it sounds like you have experience with both brands, do you feel that the Lavry is really worth the price difference from the Apogee?

It sounds like which converter you decide to use for monitoring is really the most important though. In that case, do you have any experience with a D/A such as the Benchmark DAC-1 and how it might compare to the Lavry D/A?

Apogee would probably be a great front end for tracking and mixing, but the nicer Lavry's might be a little better for two track D/A or for mastering. Kind of what was said earlier by Massive. In this situation I think you are looking at a real win-win situation. I can't see as how either would let you down.

You should really take this thread to Prosoundweb and go right to Brad Blackwood's forum. Plenty of people with experience with benchmark, lavry, apogee, mytek, prism, weiss, hedd, etc.

Including Dan Lavry! :D

But yeah, I use the Lavry converters strictly because of the "purity" which I suppose, I would shoot for in any case, but I guess I'm a bit predisposed to that anyway... I do think they're worth the difference in price. Which really isn't much in the grand scheme (Blue vs. Rosetta 200) AND you can work at multiple rates if you need to with the LB's.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the input. Going to try out that website you gave there Teacher. Thanks again!
