What is that guy on?? For that price he's not going to be scamming anyone because noone is going to buy it. It doesn't even have an erase head. And no, there are no tubes.

It doesn't have a pinch roller either and it's missing knobs.

i have this on my watch list because i have this exact deck! but yeh the guy is nuts. for the record, it does have an erase head, all the way over to the left (that's how these are set up, with the extra space). what it doesn't have are tube preamps! (or any mic preamps at all for that matter). and if it did, it would only have ONE! ITS A MONO DECK! yeh and museum pieces usually don't have aftermarket knobs, etc.

...It doesn't even have an erase head...QUOTE]

Actually the erase head is there...at the far left by the entry guide to the headblock...that's called position 4. But that does nothing to mitigate the fact that that listing is an absurd listing...

Shoot...came to my place and you can take home a 440C...mono headblock and the heads aren't great but unlike teetandteet's mine has the servo capstan, is in better condition, comes with TWO electronics modules and a fully loaded 4 channel head cable box... The block is a 1/2" block with 1/4" full-track heads but with the two modules it could be converted to halftrack with halftrack heads, and since the block is 1/2" and the head cable box is 4 channel it could also become a 4-track. Turdandturd's would take a lot more work to be a halftrack or 4 track. Mine actually works...comes with remote and even a pinch roller...but, alas, his must be better because I only want about 1/4 what he is asking for his...too bad mine isn't museum quality...then I too could get $1800...

Check Bill's other items too ;)
Looks like he drove his forklift (or more likely a front load tractor :D ) through debris of a local "museum" .
He must love his "sell similar item"-button , that's why his descriptions are edited copy/paste style BS and that why tubes (or what not) can pop up you never know where... lol

Oh yeah, I see the erase head now. Actually that's where mine is too.

After looking at that auction and some of his others, it looks to me a couple of older studios in Louisiana got submerged and now he's offering "flood decks".

I wonder if he sells cars too.

Not sure how much newer the 440 is then the 350 but I had the chance to buy a 350 mono deck that did have tubes at one time but was converted to solid state by some company. I could buy it for $50.00 but I don't have a use for it.

thats a good deal if its working!

I wrote to him and asked:

You sell lots of tape on eBay, at this price, why can't you test this machine?

I doubt I'll get a response. I would encourage others to do the same. Maybe eBay will see a bunch of unanswered questions on his side and start to do something about this guy.

That's the number one thing that pisses me off about e-Bay sellers of gear.

"Sorry I have no way to test it", or even better, "I know nothing about this equipment". And at the bottom of the listing; "No Returns Accepted".

Well what the hell are you doing with a piece of gear you can't test and know nothing about? Are pawn brokers and other owners of this equipment stupid enough to buy it in the first place without testing it before they turn it for a sale?

Who'd be fool enough to buy a POS that hasn't been tested?

I'm shopping for a DA-38, 78, or 88 or an Alesis ADAT, and I'm damn sure not going to buy one unless my questions are answered and the unit has been tested and have at least 7 days to return it.

I don't trust anyone selling these machines, so you better convince me that it's running as it's supposed to or you aren't getting my money.

I hate that too!

I have no problems with people selling stuff which they have no clue about. And if they have no clue, and say so in the description - there is nothing wrong with that. There's Nothing wrong with telling the truth ;)
AND!!!!! If somebody has no clue about a piece of equipment, I catually would prefer he/she NOT to test it. As a matter of fact some old (especially tube era) equipment shall NOT be "tested" by someone who has no clue.

Speaking of prices. I have no problem with people asking for the items they OWN what ever the hell they wish. It's their stuff - not mine, it's up to them. Makes sense? :)
Try to be honest with yourself. One who hates people for asking high prices for their stuff also should hate people who buy great stuff for cheap or even for next to nothing.
Buying and selling are two sides of the SAME coin.
Trying to find a low price is the same as trying to sell for a high price. It's a simple math :D .

There's one thing I don't like though, and it's when people lie. The rest is math.
Do the math ;)

I agree. There's nothing wrong with the clueless telling the truth about a piece of gear.

When they don't offer a return in a reasonable amount of time for something they don't even know how to power on, that's what irritates the hell out of me.

Well, it should not irritate you, beacause there is no reason to be irritated.
If an item was described honesty you will receive your item exactly as described. Therefore there'll be no reason for you to return the item in the first place.

A honest seller needs no cover in a form of projection of an illusion of honesty and trust, such as "unconditional money back guarantee".

As a matter of fact, a honest seller needs a GOOD cover (protection) against dishonest buyers in a form of statement: "SOLD AS IS / AS DESCRIBED! NO RETURNS! NO EXCEPTIONS!" :)

***************

"Money Back Guarantee" is NOT an addition to the value of a product/service. It is NOT an insurance nor confirmation of quality of a product/service.
"Money Back Guarantee" is merely a part of mass sales strategy, a popular product of Corporate Culture.

The bigger commercial scam is - the bigger (in your face!) their "100% Money Back Guarantee, No Questions Asked" sticker is.

I just go into most deals with the understanding that, if they says its untested, that means it does not work. Period. None of that " i dont have a powercord" or "the guy who I got it from says it works" BS. If it does not explicitly says it works, I go on the side of "it doesnt".

this post is totally right on -- honesty is all that is required on eBay! if i found an old item at a thrift store and i know nothing about it, i have the right to put it on eBay and say, "hey, here's this thing -- i don't know anything about it, but maybe you do. buy it for what you think it's worth. might work, might not, i don't wanna deal with it, bid accordingly!"

there is nothing wrong with that. i am passing on something that could be very rare and bringing it to a wider audience. the alternative could be throwing it away. in a best case scenario, i make a few bucks and you get a rare item that works well. but its always a gamble.

that said, i find it annoying also because i think some people are using the "i don't know anything about it" excuse to sell something they know does not work. but its usually pretty easy to tell. honest eBayers will ask YOU questions and work with you. i have bought working items on eBay from sellers who had no idea. my general rule of thumb is if they are evasive in their responses or don't seem to care about your questions, then i pass (unless it is REALLY rare and i can deal with something broken, etc).

(PS -- this is hyppthetical -- i don't usually sell things on eBay that i am not familiar with)
