latency problem

I'm running cubase 5.0 on an 600mhz ibook, dumping audio in/monitoring through an audiosport duo (usb). It was working fine for 2months.

Now, when I record audio in it's off by about 1/2 second. I have a feeling the problem was caused when I was messing with my OMS studio setup trying to get Reason to work

Any suggestions?

Latency can be caused from a number of issues, the processing speed, the RAM, your soundcard, your video card, your drivers and other applications running in the backround. From what I understand 600mhz is not quite enuff to run audio and going through a USB port slows down the process also. The first thing to check probably though is other applications running in the backround. Go to where your startup applications are and see what starts when you boot up that you don't need.(you can also check using ctrl/alt/delete).

will tell you all the abbreviations for the applications. Another thing to check is the VST performance meter. Usually running added EQ modules slows down your puter. Try turning them all off when you record and see what happens(they should be off anyway) Another thing to try is defragging your hard drive. When you add and delete files, your hard drive gets fragmented and that slows down the performance. Plan on getting a faster computer is the next thing I guess, you're going to need one as you learn more and more about digital recording. I'd avoid using the notebook because of the need to use the USB port. If this don't help just keep reading through this website because I'm sure you're answer lies here somewhere. Good luck.
