Latency issues with multimix 8

I'm using a Multimix 8 Firewire going to a Powerbook G4 running Digital Performer 4.5 something. Here's my current monitoring setup, which will probably change very very soon, since this doesn't work too well:

CTRL ROOM OUT --> monitors

MAIN OUTS --> 15/16 on separate mixer --> (sep. mixer) routed to Group 1-2 --> (sep.mixer) Rec. Out --> headphone amp

Okay. I'm getting mad latency when I try to record new tracks. I've tried all sorts of combinations with the switches on the main bus. I can listen to myself play through the analog part of the mixer, but when I switch on the signal coming back from the computer, it's delayed, which means when I record I'm just screwed. Oh yeah, and I have a project to do by the end of the month. I would have been using my PC, but SURPRISE Windows decided to take a dump on itself.

Anyone have some insight on how to fix this? Would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!
 
Do you mean that the actual track going to disc is latent, or what you are monitoring is latent?

If it's the first, I would look into the hardware buffer settings of DP. I am not sure where this is in DP, but it should be in there. Once you find it, set it at a lower setting for tracking, and then at a higher setting for mixing.

If it is the montioring situation, you should monitor what you are doing live (guitar, vocals, whatever else) through your analog mixer. Mute the track you are recording to in DP so you don't hear it coming back from the computer with delay.
 
I changed DP's buffer setting down to the lowest, that being 64. The delay is mostly gone, but I'm now monitoring (and recording) with a slight chorus effect when monitoring from both the analog section and the digital return on the mixer at the same time. So nothing's really perfectly on the grid when I record audio. I can kinda live with this . . . kinda. But I'd rather not.

Thanks for the help, it definitely made the situation better. I'd still like to find a way to really fix this though.

I usually set mine around 512 for tracking. 64 might be too low? Also, when you say chorus, do you mean you are hearing what you are recording like this? Try muting the track in DP you are recording to if this is the case.

I am not sure what you mean by on the grid?
