latency in cubase

I'm a new user with Cubase VST, I just got my system up and running and I'm showing 450msec latency! I have a Audiotrack Maya 44 soundcard with ASIO drivers (supposed to be a good card for latency, or so I was told). My PC is low end, 500Mhz 319M RAM, is that the problem? What can I do to speed this thing up? Any help please.
 
Have you adjusted your buffering to take advantage of your cards ASIO driver? I am not familiar with your card, but if you have a low latency card and driver then the problem would be in the settings somewhere.
 
I haven't done that, but I did reconfigure some windows settings for audio redording (ex. virtual memory, disable write-behind cache, role of machine to network server). The buffer size thing scared me abit, but if it's needed I'll try it. Thanks Alot.
Anyone else?

This is like shooting for a needle in a hay stack. A little more info about your pc would help to answer your question because any number of things could be causing your latency. What version of windows are you using? Do you have a graphics card? How did you end up with 319 megs of ram? Have you tried to defrag your hard drive recently, what size and speed is it? What programs do you have running in the backround? And the mother of all questions :) " Did you use protection, might you have a virus?".

At this point God knows what's causing the latency but he isn't tellin either. If you don't have anything important on the puter then the simplest thing to do would be to reinstall your windows and start fresh. G/L
 
If you havn't adjusted your buffering in the ASIO control panel then that should be the first thing you should go and do. In the "Getting Started" manual they have a section all about it in the system set up area at the start of the manual.

If you don't adjust them, it's akin to driving a Corvette only in first gear and wondering why this "supposedly" super fast car won't go over 35. Try it and let us know if that fixed the problem.
 
In cubase, goto OPTIONS......AUDIO SET UP.......SYSTEM. Then change the ASIO DEVICE to ASIO DIRECT X Full Duplex. Then change the sample rate to 48,000Kh. Then select GLOBAL DISABLE. try this out and see what happens.
