Latency...how bad is it really?!?!?

So I am looking at getting one of the M-Adio USB keyboards, and was wondering how bad the latency really is on them? Is it really an issue, or is it good enough to ignore?

Would running the MIDI out of one of these keyboards, into the MIDI in of a firewire device provided a smaller latency?

Thanks in advance!

it depends on the audio interface you use...not the midi keyboard

what if one were to just use the usb port on the keyboard, would that solve any latency issues? I too was considering an M-Audio unit...

Like the man said, the latency depends on the audio interface/soundcard. It has absolutely nothing to do with MIDI no matter whether the MIDI interface/controller is hooked up via serial port, USB or FireWire... If your soundcard's latency is bad, then it's bad.

The only latency I've ever gotten using MIDI was my computer being too slow to process a softsynth. MIDI data is so small that even a USB 1.0 connection would be sufficient (I don't know if the keyboards are USB 1.0 or 2.0, M-Audio doesn't state on their site)

The M-Audio keyboard is also an audio interface. No idea how small a buffer size it can handle. Being USB, that probably boils down to a question of how many spare CPU cycles you can throw at the problem.
