"OLD YELLER"

In the words of Geddy Lee, "This is a song about a car."

Thanks,
chris

I don't know about the recording, but I think this is my best song. I'd be particularly interested to know if the vocals are sibilant or unintelligible.

Man...this is a great song........

get's ya goin'.......ya know?

would sound great with piano or lap steel....or both...

What did you use to mic your guit??

the vox is cool....
bass is just right....
I would like to hear more volume on the harmony vox....and more of it...a littlr bit more space from the main vox in the mix as well....

I dug the telephonic vox effect on the harmony track...brief as it was...very subtle......very cool...

Needs drums man....they will help build that excitement in the chorus....ya know?

good songwriting man,
Rock on...

Joe

JOE - I COULDN'T AGREE MORE...

*ahem*

Actually, I'm working on that. Thanks a ton for listening. I'm posting another version with louder bg vox in a couple.

thanks again,
-The Yeller Guy

[edit] the gits are being brought to you by the newly acquired Neumann K-183.

I wish it made my voice sound as cool as it does my guitars. :(

Possible to put a lo-fi link up? I can't stream the hi-fi stuff.

Thanks.

You caught it while it was updating, I think.

It should be okay now. C'mon Trip...go go go.

:D

Nice song. Reminds me of The Band.

All the instruments sit real well. Love the harmonies - very effectively used. There were several lines that caught my ear. Rhyming Yeller and cellar was too easy - your assignment is to find a more difficult one :D.

The acoustics sound quite nice. Your voice is real nice. All those "quick" harmonies around 3:00 (at least that's where I first noticed them) were cool. The answer-backs were cool too. A rather advanced arrangement.

My only complaint? Yeller and cellar... There's gotta be a better rhyme. I can think of a few...

Great job. Liked it. Trip.

hehehehehe...You know Trip, I grew up in a house with a very nice lady from Waukegan (sp.?) Illinois, and she had a hard time understanding me too.

The rhyme is "Yeller" and "Sell Her"

Texism, I guess. "Mom begged him to sell her"

The "Mom" is the lady I was referring to above, btw. I really do appreciate your listen.

Post a song soon, please. You harmonizing fool, you.

Chris I'll give this a listen after work brotha. Here's a bump for now :D

your best song is still 'every chance i get'. this is a damn close second though... maybe with the right drummer involved this would become legendary ;)?

those telephone vocal echos are very cool.

very nice harmonies as usual.

vocal line is nicely compressed. how are you doing that? i'm having much trouble with that stuff right now.

i like the multiple vocal lines at one time in the end. love the overall motion during the chorus....

now as for the thing you were asking about. i think you should capitalize further on recent spousal sympathy and go out and buy the best vocal mic you can cause your voice is fucking awsome. it's a gift. it just seems like it's not all making it to the recording. yes it does seem sibiliant to me and i don't even know what that means. it just sounds like you could use a really nice LDC placed at a distance, i think it would do somthing.

so maybe what i'm hearing is an mp3 problem? do you have lame vbr yet? you should get it.

back to the drum track, i don't hear a full drumset in my head, only the kind of stuff a guy could get away it on a porch, sticks and things, you know....just kindof like percussive noise stuff. the tamborine is a nice start.

Please???? Anyone????

Eric, that was a very detailed and well thought out post, and I appreciate it. I'm not at all used to people asking ME questions about stuff I did right, so forgive me if I go a little overboard here. You asked about vocal compression. For the first time ever, I didn't use it. I also didn't use any reverb on the lead vocal (for the first time ever). Dry as my room. I did do ONE EQ tweak on my vocal, because I'm a sibilant fuck. I notched it really heavy @ 4.1K and it killed a LOT of the SSSsssssss.

I have the LAME Encoder that Participant recommended. I'll tell you what sibilance is if you tell me what "VBR" is.

As far as the 'percussive noise' that you're so wonderful at making, I just thought I'd give you a little giggle here. I'm percussively challenged, as a player; more so than any retarded deaf man I know. If I had shot video of me doing this tambourine, it'd be marketable. I'm serious...I'm sitting in a chair with two tambourines, banging them together as fast as I can, and whenever I can feel myself "losing" the rhythm, I just shook both of 'em as fast as I could. GOD, I NEED HELP!!!!

Thanks for the post, man. I do respect drummers, you know...I'm jealous; that's all.

Oh "sell her!!" Now it's cool. That was the first one I thought of. Sorry, it was 4:30AM when I was listening.

I restate my post to "having no complaints." I restate posts like WorldCom restates earnings. :D

What do you mean "Last tune I promise."?

This was a real good song Chris! I'd say one of your best. I thought the guits and vocals sounded great. The rhythm guitar was fine, but I thought the relationship between the the vocal and lead guitar was backward. Either raise the vocal level or cut the lead level. I'm talking about just a hair, don't get carried away, it's really close.

I caught your reference to recording tambourine in another thread, and I'm guessing this is the tune you were referring to.
I've had a lot of trouble recording tambourine also, but all I have are dynamic mics. I'm hoping a condenser will sound better. Could you give some details on what you went through?

Twist

I was crying/laughing when I read your description of tambourine torture. I think it sounds real good though. REAL percussion noises always beat sampled ones imo. I go through the same self mutilation playing the guitar. I mean how the f__k are you supposed to relax with bleeding fingers and handcramps? I've never encountered an instrument that requires such muscle strain. I'm gonna head over to the guitar forum to find out what I'm doing wrong. My philosophy has always been, if it hurts, you're doing it wrong....unless you're trying to hurt yourself.

No compression eh? So you are a real singer with real control. I need to learn that stuff. I have terrible dynamic control so my vocal waves look like mountain ranges visually.

VBR = variable bit rate(aka 'a little bit of all bitrates'). When you go to select your bitrate (128,160,192, etc.) it should be an option. I use razorlame and I select r3mix settings along with VBR so I don't have to think about all of the parameters involved. I personally think that Lame VBR sounds better than anything I've tried yet.

Hope that last comment doesn't turn your post into a raging geeky techflame on mp3 details with words like lossy compression, adolf frauenhaufer, dither, filter, etc. ever notice how unattractive tech language is in comparison to say.....cooking?

The more I listen to this song the closer it comes to your number one song. Forgot to say it in my last post I think, but this is a really good song....made excellent by the singers melodic noises.

Another great tune. It would be better with Jaimee singing backup though ;) I'm just listening on headhones at work so I can't reallly comment on the sound quality but the mix sounds pretty smooth, good seperation, great performances.

Hey twist...the "Last Tune" quip is a reference to my never to be released CD, and all the songs I keep posting. Actually, I had a date scheduled with an engineer to "master" my little collection of tunes (last weekend), then I got really sick last week, and some highly educated "M.D." types found a tumor in my stomach and decided that my time would be better spent having that thing removed...so my "mastering" date got pushed back another month, and, since I had some time off, I recorded YET another tune yesterday that I think I'm gonna' put on this CD, since it'll never be finished anyway. That was probably more than you really cared about on that first question, eh?

The "details" on my chain...cool of you to ask. The gits were recorded on my new Neumann K-183. My vocals were recorded on my crappy AKG C3000, b/c JR#97 and everyone else told me to never use the Neumann for a vocal again ever! The AKG is a condenser mic, but it's harsh. Until I get a preamp (soon), I'm recording straight from the mic to my computer in CoolEdit. The tambourine was through the AKG, b/c...I mean, it's a tambourine, right? Why switch mics out?

Thanks for asking. It almost makes me feel like I did something right. :D

(tumor was benign, btw...got that word yesterday...whew).

erichenryus - Man, I'm glad you got a kick out of that. Actually, it was even funnier, b/c I left out the part where I, Honest to God, broke a SWEAT laying down the tambourine track. It wasn't so much the physical exertion as the fucking PRESSURE!!! Hahahaha. I mean, I can't really just jump back into a percussion part once I've lost it. I have to start all over. Then there was the PERFECT take that was ditched when on playback I noticed my 2 year old was behind me screaming "HAPPY HALLOWEEN" through the entire thing. True story. If you've listened to it more than 2X, then you've no doubt noticed the timing problems. That was the best I could do, man. Here's my offer. WILL LAY DOWN GUITAR TRACKS OF ANY FLAVOR, ELECTRIC OR ACOUSTIC, CLEAN OR DISTORTED, FOR DRUMMERS WILLING TO TRADE TALENTS.

Thanks for the explaination of the VBR. I'll check that box next time.

I'm also glad to hear you're coming around to my way of thinking on this song...I think it's the mental stress and physical pain I endured that makes it my favorite. Especially since it's still out of time.

TexRoadKill - I couldn't agree more. She's too big for me, though...only sings leads and stuff. As for the "just listening on headphones at work" comment, man...that's really rough. Seriously, thanks for listening. Jaimee wants to record another one tomorrow, so quit bitching.

:D
-The chatty guy

yee haw...

drums, electric guitars, are in order... then this tune will be rockin... in a country kinda way. oh... and some revving engine noises.

Loved it, really liked the song structure and performance.

My only comment is at the very beginning. There are two guitars playing, one playing what sounds like a fingerpicked rhythm part and another playing a lead line over the top of it.

With my headphones on, it souned like the rhythm part was obscuring the lead part, maybe just a tad too loud.

The song is excellent...the recording is shaky IMHO. Mix sounds mono, crammed together. What a great voice though. The song itself is great. I noticed in Winamp that even with only 3 tracks running this thing is red across the board....anyone else?

Unless, I've got a bad file I would suggest re-recording this because it's a fantastic tune!
