Hello all. This is my first post and my first time putting together my first "home studio".

I currently have a

Mac Pro 2 x 2.8 Quad Core Xeon - 8 gig Ram
2 Yamaha HS50M Monitors
MBox 2 Mini
Shure SM7B - Pro Line Tri-pod Boom stand
Live Wire cables
Akai MPK49 Midi controller
Reason 4 with mega Gigs of refills

the only thing left on my checklist is a preamp ..

I was recommended the M-Audio DMP3 due to the remainder of my budget. And with that said, I would rather spend a little more coin on a long term investment rather than a just now situation. The MP3 might actually be a great choice, its just that I am new to all of this and I would like some sound advice before index flinches.

Thanks to all that respond.

My name is Jason btw

What sort of music/instruments will you be recording? Other people? Will you be doing it semi-professionally? What about more mics?

The DMP3 won't really lose much value, btw. If I had any experience with middle/high end preamps, I might could comment - check out the Grace and FMR stuff, I suppose.

In order to break through to the next level of preamps, you kind of need to spend $400-$500 a channel or so. For the time being, I'd say you're fine with the DMP3.

The next thing you need after that is a condenser mic...probably a large-diaphragm type. Between that and the SM7 you would have enough variety to get you started. What kinds of ensembles would you like to be able to record, ultimately?
