Hi Adam.
Here's what I would do, if I were you:
Put the "SM57-type" on the Snare, and Aim it
at the Drummers crotch.
Mic the kick drum where the Mallet hits the skin.
Put 1 over head on a Boom stand, and have the drummer play the kit. Move the boom around until you find a good spot. Usually, this is right over the drummers head, in my case-this is me, since I'm the drummer in our band.
I use 4 mics on my kit.
an AKG D112 in each kick drum.
a beyer m422 on the snare.
a Radioshack PZM mounted to the ceiling directly over my head.
I'm a John Bonham fan (Led Zeppelin) so this gives me a similar sound. The guys in my band love it because, as one put it-"It sounds like a drumkit, and not like a bunch of over processed BS..."
I record on 3 tacks, Kick track, Snare track, and an overhead track-that way I can at least control the Kick and snare individually against the rest of the kit.
we wound up using 8 tracks on
a Tascam DA38 16-track setup.
Hell, if I'd have known that ahead of time-I would have only bought 1 Tascam DA-38, and put the rest of the Money into a PreSonus AP88 Compressor/Gate unit(about $700 for 8 channels of Compression & Gate in 2 rack speces), and a few more outboard pieces or better Mics.
