This guy on Craigslist in Los Angeles is selling Neumann U87 "clones". Check this out:

"...Back by popular demand, the Neumann U87 clones. These mic's sold out quickly; but I just got my hands on a new batch (new old stock). Very smooth, rich and warm sound, which means you won't get that nasty "SSSS's" from the cheap high-treble boost you hear in most other Chinese-made condenser mic's. Get a classic tone for LESS THAN A TENTH of U87 retail price! Just type "Neumann U87" in Froogle search and see how much of a price difference you're dealing with.

These mic's work well with voice and acoustic instruments, taming sibilance and high-end harshness. From user-reports especially good as room-mic's (e.g., for drums or guitar amps). Although not made to replace the Neumanns; they sound really great for what it's worth. So if you're looking for that sound without breaking the bank, here's your best bang-for-buck opportunity.

Originally made as pre-production models for SE electronics, yet never sold commercially so consider these as rare items.

Specifications:
-Large-Diaphragm Condenser microphone
-XLR, 48V Phantom Power
-Cardioid pattern
-Includes an internal switch, -6dB roll off @ 100Hz (to eliminate low-end rumble from mic stand, etc.)
-Comes w/ custom shock mount and protective jewel case
-Brand NEW, never opened, still sealed in shrink wrap (one in pic is a demo piece)

$250 each, or $450 for a stereo pair. Even more discount if you buy more, just ask me.

Email Tim for more info/questions/pics, etc..."

I'd like to get some of you guys to weigh in on this. Like the guy says, "They are not made to replace the Neumanns", but my question is have any of you heard of DAPRO mics? Is this guy trying to rip people off? And if they're good, Who want's to get in on a group buy? :D

Sounds like poop to me, more chinese poop. If you want a mic for <=250, there are plenty of cost-effective models that have been mentioned on this board ad nauseum.

I got a suspicion that you're right. I was just hoping to be able to cash in on a rare opportunity. I think he says that they are Chinese made. I have a AT4040 that I bought brand new for $300 at GC. It is my main (only) vocal mic. So, I'm not hard up for mic. I just saw the ad and thought I'd post it..

well, he's got a firm handle on cloning industry-standard marketing fodder. those are some of the more abused terms used in ad copy and mic manufacturing propaganda.

"smooth, rich and warm"...sounds like a laxative commercial. I wonder what the next adjective for chinese knock-off will be, perhaps you'll see an ad saying that they have that caucasian sound.

Yeah, I think that microphones are a little more difficult to clone than golf clubs. Keep using your 4040; that's a terrific mic. Spend your money on room treatment!

There's your answer right there......aint a $250 dollar chinese mic anywhere in the world that's gonna outshine your AT....besides, if these mics were true "clones" of U87 mics, they would put a big dent in sales of real U87's. I dont see any dents in Neumann's armour....

I believe I'll buy myself a pair right now! Obviously this is a great deal on mic that are every bit as good as a Neumann U87!
