can great recordings be done on a laptop computer? say with another hard drive hooked up and the right sound card.

Good, yes, great...I doubt it. Too much electrical noise from all the stuff so close together. But you can make a small, portable system out of a "normal" computer if you try.

Well, if you really want to get fancy there are rackmount cases available! But all you need is a very small tower or desktop case, maybe add some padding around it (spray adhesive and closed-cell foam from a camping supply store or neoprene mouse pad material) for bounces, and a good handle. Look around a bit and you can find Anvil-type cases of all kinds...one will fit the computer and perhaps a second one to fit the monitor. Or use a well-padded old suitcase! They make small monitors, like 9" sizes, too, which are great for packing with you.
