Captain Sea Boots
Hey folks. I think I need to buy a laptop. I do a fair amount of recording away from my home, and I am tired of dragging my desktop around. As for an interface, I have a MOTU 828mkii. I have a SP-VTB-1 and a board if I need more pre-amps. I know very little about the laptop market. Can someone give me some good suggestions? I will do almost all of my mixing on my computer at home. Also, I am not a huge VSTi guy, maybe a few per song. I use Tracktion almost exclusively as my recording/mixing program. I don't care if it's Mac or PC. I just want something that will do the job well for relatively cheap. I will probably record no more than 6 tracks at the same time.

What's your budget? Personally, I've never had a Dell I didn't absolutely love, and have done a fair amount of recording with 2 different Dell laptops. They tend to be a bit more expensive than others, but I think they are worth it. The most I've ever done is 2 track simultaneous recording, though. If you have a fast enough processor, it shouldn't be a problem.

i have a Dell Inspiron 9100 (3ghz 512mb ram & a single HD) and it works great. so well in fact that it is now my only DAW. i turned my desktop into a web server (linux... apache tomcat running php and mysql).

i use it with a tascam fw-1884 for recording/mixing at home, and with an edirol fa-101 for recording outside of the studio.

I was hoping to keep it around a grand, but I might be able to go up to $1500.

If you don't need hundreds of VSTi's then consider a refurbished used model....

Perhaps a PIII 1ghz, some of the early top models came with firewire.... then you could Max out the RAM and get a really big 7200rpm laptop drive (the standard is 5400rpms which is too slow)...This should easily record Multiple tracks for you...!!! I used to be able to get 12 tracks with a Celeron 500

I'm using a two year old H/P Pavilion laptop, 1.8 ghz AMD Athlon XP, 1 gb ram, a MOTU 828mkII, and windows XP home, like Crosstudio, it has become my main DAW.
