I have a Compaq Armanda 1750, that I got a couple of years ago in college
(win 98, 64mb ram, and 3.67gb HD, I can't remember how many Mhz but I am
sure its not much, probably between 200 and 300 maybe more). my more than
capable Desktop PC is in bedroom (not easily portable) and my Motu 828 is
rack mounted with my 16ch mixer and a Adat interface to get me 8 more
channels (portable). So here is my problem, I want to record my band but I
don't want to drag my Desktop to our rehersal space, so I was wondering if
any of you guys are recording with laptops and if so how is it working. I
think I still might be able to upgrade the laptop, I would like to know what
would work best if I was trying to record about 10 tracks at once, or am I
fighting a battle I will never win and just buy a new laptop. By the would
be using Cakewalk Pro 9, and my desktop I am using Sonar. I eventually would
like to get the glyph m-project 828 add-on 40gig Firewire HD in my rack so I
could record with the lap-top and the go home and do all my editing and
mixing on my desktop. Let me know what you guys think.

I have a Compaq Armanda 700 which is 700MHz PIII, 128M ram. The drives are still only 5400 RPM. Now I don't record with mine and only use it sometimes for editing (at my day job). I had to quite a bit of tweaking to make it run around 16 tracks of 24 bit/44.1 audio. Plug ins are right out.
