Hi - I'm looking to write ambient/spaceage music using mainly MIDI, audio for piano and voice. I'm thinking 4-6 instrument tracks but lots of effects. I have Reason 3.0 but haven't used it yet - Because I need a new Laptop which will be used 90% for music and 10% for XP office stuff. What minimum reqirements do you think I'll need? Is a firewire necessary or is USB 2 good enough for MIDI? I was looking at the custom ones by sonica, pcaudio, etc... not sure if I need those beasts. My budget is $2000 but preferably 1500. Want to go PC for monetary concerns.

ive got an ibook for sale, check the ads.

well if you wanna go with a pc, check out an AMD. A dual core AMD processor would work great, and they are affordable.. If not a pentium 4 will do.

Also, be sure to get an external hard drive to store all your songs and your samples.

USB and Firewire are similar, but often with usb you may experience a delay when recording. I would say pci card is one of the best ways to do home recording because of the straight connection to the computer's motherboard.

Reason is a great program..try it...

well...

desktops are a different story but in my opinion, when it comes to laptops...

(prepare for multi page arguement thread)

get a mac.

the macbooks are absolutely amazing in my opinion. 2.0ghz core 2 duo, a gig of ram, superdrives, great lcds, and the sexiest, most portable laptops on the market. wayyyy better drivers and overall just a much better experience. microsoft office is available, as are many mac equivalents. you can put windows on it and have both xp or vista and osx. dont be put off by anyone that tells you theyre incompatible with windows or they are slow or overpriced or dont have any good software available.

even if i wanted a windows laptop, id still buy a macbook and put windows on it instead.
