I am going to buy a laptop for music recording. I want to be able to record midi and digital audio for composition. What types of things should I be looking for, and what should I avoid?

why are you gonna buy a laptop and not a desktop? im just curious...buying a laptop for digital audio is limiting yourself from the start...

The laptop goes along with my transient lifestyle. I'm not looking to produce CDs or even demos. I just want to use my Cakewalk Guitar Studio program to capture ideas and relay them to other people I'm playing with. And also to record tracks for practice.

like ed said i think that would really be holding yourself back... I believe for what u need something more like the line 6 POD guitar recorder.. i havent used it myself but i hear its a great little machine , it comes with heaps of effects too... plus i believe its a lot smaller than a notebook..
But if u are content on using a notebook , im not very experienced with recording with one. I network a notebook (what im using now) to my DAW so , like u said , files can easily be taken on the road and edited outside the studio .. though i dont see much need for this as editing sound requires a bit more of a stable environment. The one im using has mic input , and a joystick port(can use to hook up midi device) but really it doesnt compare to what u could get for a lot less in a desktop.. somethings to think about .... goodluck and let me know how the notebook works for recording..?? seeya
