Does anybody know of any pc laptops that are generally better for recording... like brandwise--hp, acer, compaq etc.

I'm hoping for 2 gb of ram and a 250 gb hard drive.

unfortunately windows vista though....:(

I'll fire off my first response at this one. Laptops are all built on integrated audio codec that are horrible for recording. None of them come with ASIO even, and the best you can hope for is 15-20ms under ASIO4ALL. You need an external interface if you're going laptop recording, so buy the laptop that has the other features you want, then start saving a couple hundred for recording hardware.

I'm looking at externals myself right now as well.

I 've used recording on a laptop before with asio4 all. I didn't need monitoring though... I can't remember how I set things up but I could still hear my voice when I sang and heard the tracks playback. But yes and external interface would be nice (maybe an mbox)

I've had absolutely zero problems with my Gateway laptop through a Motu828mkII daisy-chained to a Glyph firewire drive.

I picked the Gateway because it has TexasInstruments firewire chips built-in.
I would HIGHLY suggest (even if you don't currently plan to use a firewire device) that you ONLY get a laptop with TexasInstruments firewire chips inside...

first off, thanks for the info. Can you explain what texas instruments firewire is?
