I've just gotten Cubase LE and I want to use it in a laptop. I've heard Word Clock doesn't sync up very well with some laptops so I'm looking for recommendations (other than Apple) as well as laptops I should stay away from.

I'm a "one man band" so I only use one input at a time. I have a midi controller and some sampling software that I use for everything but guitar. I run my guitar through a Presonus firebox (Cubase LE came with it) and I use a Boss BR600 as a preamp because the guitar modeling is great.

Huge question to be honest. First off, buy from someone you can return it to so that if it can't handle what you need you aren't stuck with something that won't do what you need it to do.

These guys build laptops specifically for recording:

They're a bit more pricey but it's nice to get things done right. With something like dell you have to worry about Ricoh chipsets. And not JUST the firewire. Theirs have ricoh all over the place, buss/irq/usb/et cetera. Plus they really skimp on the bios.

I ordered a Dell laptop recently. After doing some heavy tweaking it still couldn't handle all the simultaneous tracks I pushed through it...just 5 btw. So I knew to return it in a hurry.

I'm warming to the idea of an iMac. What do you all think? A PC or an iMac?

Yeah, I was going to respond to your thread but then I saw you say no Apple. If a Mac is in your budget I would say go for it. I use both platforms and would always choose a Mac. BTW, an iMac is not a laptop...you probably realize that but I thought I'd let you know just in case.
