I need a laptop and Pro Tools, and will be getting this soon. Its a must to have the Pro Tools for a project I am doing.

1. It seems all the laptops have Vista. Is that gonna suck?? I cant see where PT runs on vista  It will be a high end laptop.

2. I am looking at the MBox series. If I am reading it correctly it only has 32 tracks?? Is that correct?? That aint enough. :( I will need 48 or 64. Is there something I am missing?

3. I have an M-Audio interface already, so I could get the Mpowered. Is the Mbox better? I dont need much in the way of inputs. I need the best I can get within a reasonable budget.

I dont know PT at all. I'm frightened, hold me :( I will need to learn it lickety-split. Are there versions of PT with more than 32 tracks that are affordable? I cant spring for full blown PT but I can drop a grand or more.

1) Vista is not compatible with PT yet. They're working on it. personally I wouldn't get vista for a few years anyway.

2) Only 32 tracks unless you get the DV toolkit expansion

3) stick with M-Powered then

unless you get the DV toolkit, you're stuck at 32. The next upgrade is HD.
Maybe this will help you: http://protoolsforum.com/ProToolsLE1.html

Thanks Benny, that is VERY helpful, I bookmarked that link.

The DV expansion is a grand. Thats ridiculous, its only 16 more tracks. That said, I dont see a way around it. I can eat 32 tracks up without breaking a sweat. :D

I sure hope it is worth it. :o I am very comfortable with Sonar. I am doing a project that will be done in my home and at some serious studios for the tracking, I will only track keyboards here. There is no work-around, is there? I think I already know the answer. :(

That's the thing about PT.... when you go with their products you are locked into THEIR solutions. They do that so they know exactly what will and what will not run with their products and they don't have to support a thousand driver variations that "just barely work".

Either you go with that or go to another product.

Thanks again Benny, thanks Tim :)

no, it's $500
Thats better. :D I can do that.

Either you go with that or go to another product.

So I have noticed. I am perfectly content with Sonar having used it for years, but I have no choice for this project, its gotta be PT so I can use multiple studios.

as far as not having vista, theres always 'ole reliables... mr steve jobs and his crazy apple kopputers.
