Laptop picks up radio channel?

I got a Dell Inspiron 5100 which I sometimes hook up to my little cheap walmart surround system to play music. When I turn on the system theres a radio channel... always. Its really faint so you cant really hear it while music is playing but the radio channel is still on while music plays (on my laptop) too.

The chain is Laptop headphone 1/8th jack to 1/8th radioshack cord to a 1/8th cord that splits into two RCA type plugs into the uhhh... receiver/bass box thing (AUX IN. Theres only AUX IN and DVD IN). The place where all the cords plug into is also the subwoofer is what I mean.

Is there any cheap device I can plug in to block the radio channel from getting picked up? And why is that happening? I hope someone knows something. I think Furman makes power conditioners that are suppose to also block radio signals but Im not trying to get a big old rack mounted device just for my little surround system.

I hope someone can help me. Thanks again!

Joe

I had a Inspirion 5100 myself, and the output was extremely noisy.

But if the radio is only hearable while hookep up to a hifi, you could try a better shielded cable. Or a new USB Audio interface. They should be very cheap if you dont plan to do real time multitracking on it.

The noise only happens when you plug in your laptop?

Get an iPod.

By The sounds of it its your 1/8 radio shack cord any thing cheap is gonna be poorly sheilded and is bound to pick up rfi (ever wonder why cheap guitar cables make good areials?) mabe get something a bit better sheilded?

Ok I was wrong... the stupid surround sound system picks up a radio channel plugged into the laptop or not.

I guess Ill go through the manual and think about getting some better cables.

Probably circuit/switch leakage in the amplifier. The 1960-something or 1970-something transistor amp at my parents' house does that. Try tuning it to a spot on the dial without a station. :)
