I'm in a need for a new computer for my studio
right now my needs are sampler, mastering and midi

My main recorder is Roland VS1824cd

I was thinking about laptops since I need a Really quiet computer

What do you think of this :

Model: IBM 2684-4TG R40E
CPU: Intel Celeron 1700Mhz Mobile
Memory: 128MB DDR Upgradeable to 1G
Screen: 14.1" 1024x768DPI TFT XGA
HD: 20GB
Display: 16MB AGPx4
Modem
Cdrom
Ethernet

with win XP loaded

what do you think ?
I will upgrade the memory thats for sure

Is it right for what I need ?

In general, you will pay twice as much for a laptop compared to a similar desktop PC. If the only reason you are looking at a laptop is because of the noise factor, I would advise against it.

If you do get a laptop, and you're planning on doing any kind of audio work, you will have to upgrade the soundcard. Most , if not all, soundcards that come with laptops are horrid.

As you mentioned, you would have to upgrade the RAM, 20gb is a pretty small HD these days, and the if the HD is like most laptop's, it will be slow (either 4200 or 4800rpm I believe, as opposed to the norm of 7200 for desktops).

Anyways, the whole point of this is that you can get a fast desktop system for much cheaper, install some quiet fans, stick it in a different room, build an iso box, etc etc to get the noise level down.

Remind me to never try to post again when i'm this tired :D Good luck,

Laptop does not equal really quiet computer.
For instance some have fans that switch on when they're pushed and those fans can be anything but quiet, especially because they're small and have to do high rpms to move noticable amounts of air.

In other words: Forget the laptop idea, build a quiet desktop computer. That will serve you MUCH better.

If you don't need the portability, go for a desktop. Invest the money you save in an extra (bigget) monitor, long cables so you can put the pc in the next room, and a better soundcard.
