I heart guitars!
Time to ask my mates on the BBS another question...

I'm being given a G3 Mac Laptop this weekend by a friend who's just got an iMac, and one of my other friends has a Pro Tools CDROM (I'm assuming it's ProTools Free), which I can have.

I've got all the multitracking, fx, sequencing and sound production bits & bobs I need, so I was thinking about running the Pro Tools on the laptop as a stereo editor (very handy for the Brass Band recording I've got on in September. I had to cut'n'paste the last one on my vs1680 - and when you're dealing with 40 people playing 12-minute pieces that's a LOT of head-scratching).

I've been looking at the Digigram Pocket VX as a soundcard, and was wonering if anyone had any suggestions or opinions. I know I can trust you lot to not sell me a bummer...

Cheers,

Phil

I was going to the USB route, but after research on this site as well as HC, I'm not so sure.

#1 the bandwidth is limited to 2 tracks, not a huge deal.

#2 it seems there's a lot of strange tweaking that has to happen with a USB device, and not all devices are created equal in terms of actually getting it running.

I'm going to look into the Echo Mona, although I'm not thrilled with the price or the size.

I'd like something along the lines of an Omni Studio, converted for use with Cardbus, in the $450 range.

The VX Pocket that you mentioned is nice, but lacks the connections I'd like to have.

Slight correction- USB bandwidth is limited to 6 tracks or less, depending on bit depth and sample rate. I get 4 tracks in at 24/44.1 and 2 tracks out at 16/44.1 with no problems.

Depends on which device and how it is set up. That's also with PC- I have no idea how these things might behave with a Mac.

Congrats on the free laptop, by the way. :D

Take care,
Chris
