Hello , I've been playing around with my recently built lap steel and trying to figure things out. This is a short sparce instrumental with 2 lap steel tracks , bass and drums. I'm trying to figure out how to get a pedal steel sound . My next one will have "benders" on the G and B strings. I'm not planning to do much with this one but any suggestions for improvement would be nice.. Thanks for the listen . ms

I thought the lap steel parts sounded real nice. Maybe turn down the other tracks so they don't draw attention from the lap steel. And back off the reverb just a touch.

But overall, I thought it sounded real nice.

Heard some (probably) unwanted distortion around 1:40 - 1:45.

Sounds really good to me. Bass is nice too. What sort of tuning are you using? And what is this 'bender' of which you speak?

@TripleM , Thanx for the suggestions. I did a very mild remix and backed off the drums and bass a little. Seems a little more balanced now. I also pulled the reverbs back a little. Seems I've been really overdoing the reverb lately. I also backed off a fuzz unit on the right guitar a little. Going back and forth between my monitors and headphones and with and without room correction has been messing with me.
@Bulls Hit , Thanx I Really enjoyed doing the bass guitar once I found my spot. I'm in an open D tuning. The benders I referred to are like a tremolo bar on an electric or a knee bar on a pedal steel. One palm lever will bend the G string down full step and the other will drop the B string a half step. You can keep the slide straight across the strings and move the G and B strings independently with the levers. Nice addition to a lap steel.
@Papanate , before I went to an open D tuning , I ordered a heavy gage string set specific for this tuning. They are much better than the floppy standard ones. I think they are as heavy as I can go on this guitar. I really didn't think things thru very well when building this one. Next one will be a lot heavier with a shorter scale and with string benders.
From here on out I'll use the lap steel just for fills and stuff instead of being the main instrument. I think I'm over it now .. 😁 Thanks .. ms

Really, really tasty. I love how this one moves. Are you keeping it as is, or will you repurpose it into a song with singing?

What's the advantage of heavier strings on a lap steel?
