Here is a quick review of the KRK RP-8 reference monitors. For anyone interested in researching these please check out http://www.krksys.com ! The first thing I noticed was how huge these are. I think the form factor would probably match the Event 8 series, but I didn’t realize how big they were until I unboxed them. They were nice and beefy. The 8” Proprietary Signature Yellow Woofers are made of a woven glass aramid composite, slotted Ports reduce distortion caused by port turbulence, and Radiused Corners reduce edge diffraction so your mixes have better imaging. After setting up with the proper Monster interconnects, I was ready to hear the first mix. Immediately after pushing play on the transport panel of the Nuendo 2.0 session I could hear trouble in the mix. The clarity and flat response blew me away while working the first track. These monitors revealed EVERYTHING. In a matter of minutes I had a sweet rough mix where before there was obnoxious noise everywhere. The bass response was incredible. Historically I have heard opinions that I needed to bring the bass out in some of my mixes. This most likely because of less than flat response in those frequencies. After using these monitors I heard why. The bass response is very close to true. Part of this is due to the slotted ports. Once I properly EQ’d the bass guitar, the glasses in the cupboard began to utter a pleasant rattle. The mids and highs were incredibly crisp, and clipping and other unwanted noises were drastically apparent, as was overcompression, and oversaturated effects. EQ’ing my mixes were a breeze once I had an hour or so of practice. I was amazed at how easy it was to bring the tracks out to their proper levels. In comparison to the Event Precision 8 monitors, I couldn’t tell much of a difference. Although I have not quite the pro engineer ear yet, I can say for the difference in price, the KRK is a solid value. So far I have only found these monitors at Guitar Center, but I am sure they are readily available at many music outlets. Although musicians friend does not carry KRK.
