After 11 years of dedicated service the battery in my Korg M1-R died. I called a couple of local electronic music repair places to find out what it would cost to install a new battery.

One place: $65.00 plus the cost of the battery($7.00). And the guy told me he couldn't do it on the spot. I would have to leave the unit with him overnight.

Another place: $50.00 plus the cost of the battery($5.00). He could do it on the spot if I made an appointment.

For the money they were asking I thought it was probably a tricky procedure and better not attempt it myself. I was ready to pay the money when just for the hell of it I opened the unit myself. There was the battery, a lithium wafer (CR 2032), in plain view on the main board and easily accessible. I gave it a gentle push foward, with care taken not to damage an adjacent capacitor, and out it popped. I went to a battery shop, bought a replacement ($3.00), brought it home and slid it into place. No problem.

hixmix-

I just paid $65 to get the battery replaced in my Korg O1/W, and I had to leave it for 10 days. Oh well, that's the price I pay to be incompetent when it comes to simple electronics.

At least I backed up my programs that I've spent years programming.

Uh oh!

Life is not so simple. When you change the battery on the M1-R the factory presets need to be re-initialized. Need special software.

Oh well. Goodbye $65.00.

So I call a couple more places to find out what they charge to re-install the factory presets.

One place: "$60.00 and you have to leave unit with us for two weeks. An extra $30.00 if you want us to do it the same day. Plus $20.00 for the battery, if you need one". (Twenty bucks for a three dollar battery? Yeah right.)

Another place: $20.00 to install the sounds. I can bring it in and he'll do it on the spot.

So I bring the M1-R to him. He sticks in a PCM card and the sounds load in like 5 seconds. He was even willing to do it for $10.00 cash but I didn't have any cash so I paid $20.00 with my credit card.

It pays to make a few phone calls and shop around.

Now the guy says he undercharged me. He wants me to come back and pay him an extra $200.00!
