kind of a deal?

i was just about to order a m-audio usb mobile pre and studio projects b-1 condenser to get started from zzounds , when i noticed you get a free mxl 990 mic if you order the mobile pre from musicians friend...but musicians friend doesnt have the b-1! .... is the mxl990 a comparable mic or should i spend the extra 100 to get the b-1 from zzounds

Why not get the Pre from MF and get the Marshall
And the B1 from zz sounds.

I've never used an MXL 990, but I highly recommend the ST B-1. A fantastic do it all mic at a great price. No home studio should be with out one!

well yeh thats what im probably going to do since its a free gift....but if it was complete crap then i'd rather just order from 1 place, also if it was not complete crap then i could save 100$ on not buying the b-1 .... i guess my question is, should this particular free mic stop my purchase of the b-1,

You could surely find some uses for the 990. I like it somewhat on fingerpicked acoustic stuff. Hell it's free so you might as well get it and play around with it. If you don't like it you could sell on sleeze bay. I would still buy the B1 though. You could play around with both mics and do some comparing and have different colors to work with.
