Aaaahhhh . . . . . much better!

Keep at it and you will be scary-good one of these days. This is some very talented songwriting, by the way.

Refreshing and interesting.Little much high end on the drums,I like 'em to hit me in the chest more.Bring up the vox and compress the sh*t out of it and give it some reverb.Good song ,real power behind the concept.Drummer is a little show-off-ish.Like all his tricks in one song.I am guilty of this too.Good composition.Needs a remix...

hahaha. my bass teacher told me the same thing about the drummer (who he knows) when he heard a taped version. i also forgot to mention that the end is a little glitchy, which is not on purpose... i've just been to lazy to re-record the drum tracks on that part.
More on the drums - the last time i re-mixed it i took off a lot of the high end. the crash is still there haunting me. i think it's because i used the "fat drums with just 3 mics" trick that was on the site earlier. i actually used four... i just don't like mic'ing the toms. the fact the the OHs are so low is probably what caused the cymbals being loud. And they are shure bg4.1s. I'm saving up for a pair of akg 451s... hopefully they'll sound better.

p.s. - anyone in philly is welcome to see me and my music school perform a tribute to Frank Zappa next friday and saturday. everyone on the song is in the show.

I know it's been a while since this thread was active, but I wanted to re-post the song. Of course, I've re-mixed since the first time I posted (I hate that version now), and I also put it on a real internet radio website. It's funny, I've been waiting for my real studio to get built, so I had to mix this all through headphones (no room for monitors in living room). Anyway here's the address

Thanks to all who have posted feedback already,
Julie

Hi Julie. I didn't catch this the first time around, but it sounds pretty good. Very impressive for your age! I still think the drums might be a tad loud. That's a great tune you've got there. Difficult to listen with the buffering problems right now. I'll check back later.

you have a pretty good ear. You are hearing the issues that have been pointed out and are definately responding in the new mixes and hearing them yourself as well. Cool...
Very nice arrangement on the tune. The drums are just a tad busy. whenyou get the vocals, bass and piano up it`ll be much more dynamic. Nice listen, and good luck on your presentation to the school.

I will be attending Berklee College of Music in the fall, and for their demo's they want solo playing. They want to hear your chops, how you play, styles, influences, what you have studied. They usually tell you not to submit originals for this reason. Maybe it depends on the school.
Just my 2 cents.

Oh... I guess I did forget to mention that I got into the school. Now I just have to figure out how to get money...

Thanks for the replies,
Julie

I can tell you used cans to mix. The vocal is a bit low, and the panning is real narrow.

Other than that it sounds pretty good to me.:)

Again, sorry for beating this thread to death, but I have been listening to other people's mp3s, and I feel like mine sound mushy in comparison - like there's cotton in my ears. I don't think it is my gear as bleyrad has a 1224, and his recordings aren't mushy at all. Am I just a horrible mixer?

Headphones are OK to use as another reference, but you should really be mixing on speakers, preferably studio monitors.

I use 3 sets of speakers to mix, because none of them are "monitors". I also check my mixes on my living room stereo, in my truck, and on the boom-box in my garage. I find it's pretty much impossible to make things sound good on all of 'em, so I just take notes and look for a pattern.;)

Do you think it's just because of the headphones? I've mixed stuff on my monitors before and it still sounds bad.

Pretty cool tune. It does have that 'headphone mix' quality. Remix it with monitors and a lot of the problems should go away.

In general it's a little inconsistent sounding with the levels. Use some compression on the seperate tracks if you can and it should help even things out. Especially the vocals, drums and bass.

If your anything like me you'll never be completely satisfied with anything you do.:D

Tracking counts for a lot. You can always remove things from a mix, but it's extremely difficult at best to add things you didn't capture originally.

Case in point: I've been working on a tune that I originally recorded on my TASCAM 414. The sound quality on that original recording, to be honest, sucks. However, my attempts to re-create the vibe of the original performance have so far fallen short. I'm also not happy with my drum tracking skills yet.:p Yeah, I have cheap gear, but it's a poor musician who blames the instrument.:D

You have to recognize when you get to point of diminishing returns. Tweak until it doesn't sound any better then stop, or risk making it sound worse than no tweaking at all.;)

Hope this makes sense. :)

TexRoadkill - I actually used a lot of compression (especially on vocals, drums, and bass). Waves c1 to be exact... though I am looking to get an RNC asap, I probably am just bad at compressing things. I have read a million articles and how-to's about it (especially that one everyone loves here), but it still angers and confuses me.

Thanks for the replies,
Julie
