OK, I've worn my ears silly on this one and could use your help, especially on the vocals.

My friend on drums and percussion (same guy as the Sluice cover for those who checked that out), my girlfriend reluctantly spoke a couple lines, and me on everything else.

Genre - experimental (consider that a warning;))

I was brave! I LISTENED!

It's original alright. I like the recording. Very cool. Weird doesn't bother me. I like odd stuff like this. I've been litening to a lot of Mr. Bungle lately. That's different stuff to.

Cool stuff.

Fuck yeah!

This is my kind of tune. I dig this.

I can't understand a thing said at 1:18...sounds neat but the vocals are really unclear. The whole mix has a weird dullness or maybe softness would be a better word.

I would like to hear a bit more air on the vocals, not sparkle mind you but a bit more space for them to show through.

Love the sound effects and arrangement.

One more time.

This mix gels real nice though. Is that tape? Nah...

Freaky man. The bells remind me of Ween's Viral Menengitis song.

I think the word "kidnapping at 2:20 should be screamed to the point of broken vocal cords for about four more seconds.

Way to think outside of the outside of the box.

scjrts,
Thanks for being brave. And you guessed it, I'm a Mr. Bungle fan.

Jake,
Thanks for the comments. The "dullness or softness" is there in all my mixes. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I use a sound proofed room to keep the neighbors from calling the cops - but I think it's more than just that. Any tips are greatly appreciated. I use digi 001, this one was 16 bit 44k. I also don't know what to do about the overall volume being so low.
Good idea about the last scream. I think I'll try that.
The words you couldn't understand were "They told me not to stand. I should have stayed seated. I wouldn't have fainted". I figured those would be tough to make out. I'm glad you could actually understand the rest...or could you?

Sweet!

Reminds me of something from Disco Vilante. If you were from Maine, we'd be hanging out. :)

During the heavy section ("kiddnapping and amputation" etc...), I'd consider less stereo spread on the main vocal. Maybe see how it sounds more centered.
I like the spread during the verses.

I like your drummer too! How did you record him....mics, pres, etc.

Second listen...

Around 1:20, how about a bit more presence to the vocal. Maybe add an octave lower to the mix. It would be a great spot to just "slam" the production.

One thing I really like about your tunes and mixes, and I noticed this with the cover you did, is that they become more and more clear with each listen. I like that. Like one of those hollogram posters you have to stare at for a while.

Keep putting this stuff out man. I really dig it. I've got one more "straight-ish" tune to finish, and then I'm going back into experimental mode. Maybe we could collaborate on something some time.

Great job.

Way Cool,

I could never make a mix suggestion as this could only be mixed by the creator.

If it could be spread to encompass more sonic space, you know......make it sound BIGGER, would be the only request I could give.

I am impressed !
It was the whistle that put me over on this one!
:D

Great stuff!

Thumbs up big time-Very original creative piece-Excellent main guitar riff-loved it-wheres the bass? Cool tuned percussion glock stuff. The rapid fire vocals are nearly impossible to make out the words-not that I mind..Cool you added a wierd interval to that guitar riff--how did you do that? Did you retune or use a pitch detune thing?? Like the sound...Neat horn stuff almost fish-boney--adds to the strangeness..I like the voice doing the kidnappings....etc.--I would have accented it some more-with distortion and/or echo--maybe the telephoney kinda thing--but that stuff is kinda faddish at the moment---just thinking out loud.....I like that one voice@ 2:34 (I'm going in)lol thats cool...Man this is so fun to listen too---The playing is great all around and the ideas are excellent--a tip of the hat to your drummer....As far as the mix-I like the sound of it-it doesn't have that big-time whatever to it but it sounds like a damn good home recording with character...Live drums is the ticket!!!.....And thats probably the where the biggest improvement sound wise could be made IMO-though how??? beats me-my own recordings don't have this kind of cohesion---but as a guess-sounds like your missing some of the airryness-like in the cymbals-can you add it in after the mix or should you go back in and mess with it??? Sounds like the kick could use a little "poof"--since I don't detect a bass guitar--something in that bass area to fatten it up may help....I dont know-I like the way it sounds....How do you work your drum mixing/recording?--Like the way the high hats sound-nice and tight--you mike them seperately? Anyway...I really like this a ton---and I mixed for about 8 hrs today--so take any freq related stuff with a grain.....Fine work!

My kind of stuff, I really enjoyed this.

Especially liked the way you got the title lyrics to sounds "Amppuuuuttaaaashuuuuunsszzz"

Kind of reminded me of a cross between Pink Floyd and Monty Python

This is BRILLIANT!!!!!!

No mix complaints at all.Very unique and original.I really, really enjoyed this.Thanx for keeping it fresh. So many cool moments I can't begin to say...GREAT JOB!!!

:D :D :D .........damn.........HUGE!!!!!
......what mix...... I cant get into mix 'cause the composition is so Huge!! Very Very cool man. This is a FUN listen. The rhythm in this is just deadly..... .....If you ever have room in one of your tunes for a guest bass player, I would love to sit in. I love all of the little tidbits of earcandy in this. ...is that a triangle in there?:D

Im at work so I cant get into the depth of this mix.... .....Im gonna hit this at home.

HUGE!!!

Way cool. I really like the sounds and the rhythm. Just a really good listen. I can't seem to think of who/what this reminds me of, but real good stuff. I think I even own something like it or did. Hmmm.

I would like some more definition in everything, but then again I have the same problem with similar equipment. I know on my end, it's probably not the equipment.

Anyhow, great job. Now how do I give stars?... Oh there it is. I will give it a try. 5 from me.

Fantastic. The Pixies do a theme tune for a 70s cop show starring Ren and Stimpy.

I really loved this - totally mental.

Believe it or not I do have a couple of mix comments - take them with a pinch of salt, mind.

There's a hole where the bass guitar should be - is this deliberate? I think the tune would really benefit from a cool, rumbling bass line.

The "kidnapping and amputations" vocal - either bring it to the centre, or put a delay on it and pan the delay over to the right hand side. At the moment the mix sounds lopsided at those bits.

Anyway, just details, I loved this. Keep up the excellent (and odd) work.

Cheers

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrreat stuff!

I'm with SLuiCE on the mix comments (so what's new? ;) )

And with Guernica on the big 5!

Thumbs up!

I was brave as well. Weird is not my style. So I can't say great song. But I can say, "Interesting song."

Very interesting the way you put the horn parts in. The off-kilter lyrics were.... were.... What were they?

The vox get covered in spots. Mostly by the highhat I think.

Trip...

If you're doing what I think you're doing, I can see why you wouldn't bring the bass in too hard. And it's a big part (the production with light bass occupation) of what reminds me of Disco Vilante. I wouldn't mind hearing a bass-up mix, but I like it light here too.

Thanks, extremely helpful suggestions!!! I'll work with these over the coming week and repost.

Sluice,
You read my mind on the vocal suggestions. I already lessened the stereo spread in the "kidnappings" part and agree that I should do more so. For the other part, in a previous attempt at this song I did have a lower vocal. It was really just laziness leaving it out this time.
Drums were done in a dead room. Pres were the digi 001 stock pres and sm pr-8 (bottom of the line). SM57 on snare, PG52 on kick, Nady CM-88 and MXL 603 for overheads, and $35 Audio Technica dynamics on the toms, and ecm 8000 as a room mic.
If the stuff you're doing now is "straightish" then I'm scared to hear your experimental stuff;). Anytime you want to collaborate let me know!
The Disco Volante similarity as far as lack of bass was coincidence, but I know what you're talking about. Strange mix on that album.

jcmm,
I know what you mean by "bigger". I'm gonna try some things, but I think a lot of the problem was in the tracking. All my mixes lack that biggness. I wish I knew what it was.

Stratomaster,
There is a bass. I think I'm gonna squash it and bring it up. I went for the "can't tell where one instrument stops and the next one starts" kind of sound but I think I went too far. The "weird interval" on the guitar is exactly that. In the 3rd verse I doubled the guitar part a whole step higher, and then added another one a whole step lower. There's no effects on anything except the vocals and the glock- I'm gonna try some reverb and eq to add that "airyness" to the cymbals. See response to SluiCe for drum micing. I think the hi-hat is coming strong from the room mic. I'll be beefing up the bass. Does your mixing 8 hours mean I'll be getting a CD soon? I'm anxious;)

Khompewtur,
You made my day with the Pink Floyd Monty Python comment:D

WISC - Thanks!!!

Guernica,
I don't know about huge, but glad you thought so. You feel like putting a bass part on this? PM me if you do. I've heard your stuff and would love to have you on this.

skids,
That definition thing is a killer. I tried using no plug ins (except vocals and glock) as an attempt to keep definition, but it wasn't enough. Good luck to you on that too! Thanks for the stars.

Thanks Pedullist! I've think we listen to similar stuff.

TripleM,
The lyrics? The first thing the drummer told me after his son was born was "they told me not to stand, I should have stayed seated, I wouldn't have fainted". For some strange reason i decided to write a song comparing a C-section to a kidnapping. Don't ask me why? I don't know.

Ya I didn't mean you were trying to emulate their production or anything. But rather that sort of mix. And I still find it cool how your mixes reveal their details with more listens.

If the stuff you're doing now is "straightish" then I'm scared to hear your experimental stuff.

haha... listen to the new one I posted today and you'll know what I mean. About as cut and dry as it gets for me. :)
