Kick, Snare, hi hats. . .

To make my drums stand out and not sound so dull or flat what db should the kick, snare, and hi-hats be in relation to each other??

If you're using mics just on kick & snare, experiment with lower-threshold compression on the snare mic to lift out the hats. Add in some EQ for punch, and a little reverb/delay and you can get a nice balance between snare & hats. That's what I do anyway, works good with a 57 on the snare. But I use overheads as well

For more punch boost 85 by 15db and for more shimmer boost 15k by 8db. Pure magic.
