Hey, I'm new here, so sorry if this has been addressed before. In either case though, I figure prices are always changing, so older posts may no longer be relevent.

Anyways, here's my question. I'm looking to get a dedicated kick mic that has some good bass to it. I'm looking in to the following options. Let me know what you think of them, and if there are any better options. Keep in mind that my budget is 200 or less. On a side note, I realize I may need to use two mics to get the sound I want, but for now I'm only looking for the "boom," not the "click."

Shure Beta 52
Audix D6
AKG D112
Sennheiser E 602

Those all run about $200. For about $40 more, I might consider the EV ND868.

Let me know what you guys think. Thanks a lot!

The ATM25 is a good, fairly neutral kick mic. It's not going to impart its own sound on your kick so if your kick goes boom...so will the mic. Great on bass cabs, toms, etc as well.

Now, if you're only looking for boom...that cheapo CAD kick mic that's going around for like $50 is the ticket. I hate that mic...cause that's all it will do well in my opinion. Look at the freq response of that mic, it's all true. WAY hyped low end. You can eq a click into it if you like, but I tracked with one once (at someone's request) and had to eq the living crap out of it to try and tame that low end.

But it'll boom. Otherwise that mic will work you to death in my opinion.

I like the ND868 as well, it's similar in many ways to the ATM25 and is fairly neutral.

All of those have good reputations. If it was my own money I would get the Sennheiser since I have had good luck with Sennheisers in general.

Thanks guys, the ATM25 looks like a good option that I missed. Anyone else have any input for me?

I use the AKG D112 (and sometimes the D12) and they're great... you need a good pre for it, though.........

I like my Beta 52, but want a D112. I've been told that the D112 is more user friendly. Nothing wrong with a beta 52 though. It's a very solid mic.

F.S.

have you checked out the shure beta 91? lots of thump and some attack to it, a very natural sounding mid cut, too. I like it quite a bit, and it's right at the same price as the others.
