I need to add a kick drum mic to my locker. I've been renting a Shure Beta 52, and it's OK; I can get one for a bit less than $200. What else should I be considering in that price range (or below)?

some mics to research:
Audix D-6
AKG D112
Sennheiser E602
Audio Technica ATM 25

There are a couple others that are in that price range, but their names escape me. Use the search function in the mic forum for bass drum mic and you will find plenty of useful info on this topic and these (and other) mics.

BTW - what kind of sound you want?

Good luck.

Todd

Audix D6 bro. $199 @ musiciansfriend or sweetwater. great mic... i own it and use it. not only does it sound fantastic, it's extremely durable!!! this allows it to withstand road use as well as studio. good luck bro!!! also, AKG D112 is a good mic for $199... but i would go with the Audix.

If there's a GC around you go in and hassle them. They'll come down 20-30 bucks for ya, and you really don't have to hassle them much. And yes the d6 is one hell of a durable mic. I've dropped mine more times than a mic that sits a foot off the ground should be.

AKG D112! You'll never put it in the locker! It'll be in your kick forever! :D

i broke and bought the blue kickball just cause it looked sweet and was decently priced (120) i think it sounds great, but i probably would love the way a d6 sounds too. its up to you.

Budget? ATM-25...seems like these go for less than the other mics mentioned on ebay, and are very good on kick. A sennheiser md421 or beyer m88 would also be good options, since you can use them on many sources, including kick.

I usually use the D112 inside the kick. For $200, it's a great mic. You don't need to upgrade, ever and you can use it on guitar/bass cabs for overdubs. I've also heard of people using it on vocals, but haven't tried it myself. Maybe next session.

ATM25 is one of the best mics on the planet. It also does kick drum.

Don't laugh: Superlux FK-2. This little gem has really suprized me time and time again. And it's around $40. Its my new favorite!

Hey GGun, you live in Texas, are you familiar with Brook Mays Music Group? They have D6 mics on clearance for 40% off of 199.98. I picked one up for myself. Give them a call if thats what you want, you can't beat that price brand new.

I've got an AKG D550 that I paid about $45 for new on some type of clearance at Guitar Center. Not sure what the normal price is, but I think it's an awesome sounding kick drum mic that only needs a touch of EQ.

(being happy to spend $200 on a kick mic is my kind of budget :p )

fwiw, i've been looking at the Electro Voice N/D868, there's a decent review here which compares it against a few of the other mics mentioned.

I've compared the EV N/D868 and the D112 and the EV sounds alot better to me. The d112 just sounded fake with no thump.

The D6 is perfect on every kick I've used but one, where I used an SM7.

The ATM25 is a great kick mic. I own several.

I also noticed the selling price on eBay for ATM25 dropped quite a bit when the Audix D6 came out.

The Audix D6 is probably a "better" kick mic, if not one of the very best. The ATM25 is no slouch, and is a real bargain on eBay, now that they are no longer the hot item.
