Functionally obsessed.
Hey folks,

I haven't yet used the sidechain option on the 166xl in conjuction with the gate. I'm trying to figure out how to use it, so I apologize in advance if this post is a little confused.

What I want to do is use an external signal to gate another signal (naturally, right?). I'm making a weird little song and I want to gate a white noise signal with another instrument. So, for example, I could hit a string on a bass guitar, and the white noise will come out of the gate.

First question: Does this sound like I understand how a keyed gate works?

Second question is about setup. I have the "signal that I want to gate" coming from my mixer into the 166xl on an accessory send/receive. Simple. Now, I don't know how I'm supposed to use the sidechain insert to key the gate. I have Y-cables, that's not a problem. However, I'm not sure how to use them for this application. The 166xl manual tells me that the tip is the input, and the ring is the output. OK, so... tip of the insert cable should be the "key", and the ring is the output... the output of what signal? I'm really confused here.

Can anyone help? This is a ridiculous newbie post, I know. How does one use the 166xl as a keyed gate? The manual isn't too clear on this, and hopefully someone here can give a real-world example of how to use it.

Thanks!!!

whoops

OK, I made mistake, and it makes sense now why it wasn't working.

I'll elaborate if anyone cares. Otherwise, let's let this thread die :)
