Hi,
Im new to MIDI, my question is
Can I use my keyboard(Yamaha something) and an effects processor together via midi, the keys have midi in/out. One of my friends has a bunch of guitar equipemnt and he said he has some sound/effect processors, and some might be midi. See, the keyboard has okay effects, but I want something better, but i dont have the funds for a hi-tech synth or anything.
Will this work at all?
Would I need an outboard unit?
Thanks
Chris

You mean you want to use outboard effects on the sounds coming out of the keyboard? Well, you can't so this with MIDI. The MIDI ports on outboard effects boxes are for using MIDI messages to send program and parameter changes.

You can certainly run the audio output(s) of the keyboard through any effects box...

Sounds like perhaps you think that there's some form of audio being transferred down a MIDI cable. There isn't...

Not what I meant

I mean, run an effects processor into the keyboard, and sort of use the keyboard as a midi controller, to "control" the fx of the outboard fx processor.

You're still being a bit unclear. "run an effects processor into the keyboard" sounds like you're routing some sort of output of the effects processor into the keyboard. That's not at all like "sort of use the keyboard as a midi controller, to 'control' the fx of the outboard fx processor."

To do the latter, plug a MIDI cable from the keyboard's MIDI Out to the effects box MIDI In. Then you can send messages, However, you'll need to know how to do this, so you'll need to have MIDI documentation for both devices to figure out which MIDI controller numbers to use to control whatever the effects box exposes to you.

so, if i got the manuels for both, i could hook the keyboard to the effects processor?
I dont think i really want it to be a midi controller, i just want to have more sounds on the keyboard, it has a lot, but a lot are gay, and with extra effects, i could maybe make them sound better, so really what i want is "guitar effects" for a keyboard, but not guitar effects, but i want them accessible from the keyboard, not in a chain.
Thanks
Chris

I repeat:

Sounds like perhaps you think that there's some form of audio being transferred down a MIDI cable. There isn't...

I think you need to read something that will explain to you what MIDI is.

All you can do to an effects unit with MIDI is send it control messages to switch programs or adjust parameter values. There is no audio data there.

If you want to apply effects to the keyboard, you run the keyboard's audio outs through the effects device and then into whatever you're using to amplify it, just like a guitar. The MIDI ports will be utterly useless for this purpose.

Yes, then the keyboard would be a MIDI controller only, and you would connect the audio outs of the TG-whatever to your amp and listen to/record that.
