Most stock pickups are transducers. They pickup vibrations.

After market is everything you can think of.

But almost all just plug 1/4" from the guitar to the PA or preamp or amp or what have you. Some better ones will use XLR.

P.S. The reason for wanting to learn the acoustic is portability (easier that a 72 lb. Kurzweil 88-key workstation), and most importantly, acoustic guitar emulation is a major ballbuster and 1/2. I try. God knows I try. But "there's nothin' like the real thang bay-beeeee". Give a listen to my acoustic attempts if you care to. See "Promo Medley" and "Why".....and then you will see WHY I wants' to get a real acoustic thang, and eventually and electric thang going on in my world. Thanks again! ---Lee

It's a strumming program on CD from Sonic Implants that I load into the Kurz. Didja' hear the fret squeaks? Kinda cool, but VERY limited, sound quality-wise and flexibility-wise. And I did compress the shite out of that piece. It was done before I started multi-tracking individual parts. The whole musical sequence was dumped into the soundcard one-shot with vocals added later. Not exactly the right way to go about things. Like I stated, I tried... but I want the real thing. And I always wanted to play a REAL guitar and decided that now is a great time. We'll see. I am real excited about this new challange! ---Lee

If you are into classical music you should seriously consider a Classical guitar. Once you figure out where the notes on the guitar are, you should be off and running very fast.

I was weened on classical music as a French Hornist, but those days are long gone. Going to do the rock/folk thing with this new undertaking. Thanks for the additional thought! ---Lee

I can't see I mad this "transition" as the keyboard is still my main instrument, but I did pickup the accoustic after playing the keys for a few years (self taught).
While I'm not a skilled guitarist in any way shape or form, I can play adequate folk-rock accompaniments. Even some fingerstyle.
I'd say you probobly have an advantage on people strting from zero, because keyboardists usually take the time and effort to learn theory and harmony, which would be usefull when playing guitar.
It's a totally different animal. You'd find that it's easier to get passable results on a guitar than it was when you first took up the keyboard, but it's a lot harder to master.
