Sorry if there is already a post about this..it seems so simple but I'm stuck..

So I have a cheapo midi keyboard, a cable with midi to usb and a Windows 7 laptop. I don't want to record, all I want is a software that I can use a plug in with a decent keyboard sound and just play through an amp. Any suggestions?

What program would be best for this?
How am I going to get the sound out? I'll use the program to control my midi keyboard and it will output through the jack right?

I appreciate anyone's feedback.

Maybe I just need Ableton Live or Cubase? I've only use protools before so I guess I'm out of "in" for other software.....

What kind of keyboard, and what kind of USB MIDI interface?

You can make any vst sound synth playable with a vst host program.

Toybear's Minihost is free and works well.
I've used it to play the free Cakewalk SFZ with soundfonts, the free Shortcircuit sampler and others.

Another great is the free ProteusVX which has a vst and stand-alone mode (and lots of great sounds)

I should have mentioned I don't have a soundcard on the laptop other than the factory default...

Similar problem. I have akai lpk 25 but it is my first midi and i don't know how to load/upload preset or program the keyboad so that sound will come out of the pc. Help.!!!

what? you dont upload any sound into the LPK

you need a daw to host the vsti and choose the lpk as your midi controller then it will play the sound
