I am mostly a vocalist but play a little piano/keyboard.
What software/soundcard would I need so that I could go buy a cheap midi keyboard, plug it into the computer, and then have the computer act as a big synth with multiple voices and the ability to record/compose note by note or in slow motion and then fix it up/quantize, choose voices in the computer ect.

Most of the multitracking I have done untill now has been for a band with guitars/drums/bass/vocals so I am new to the whole midi thing but want to do some side projects on my own and don't have a synth, but figured the computer could do it so why go out and spend tons of money on a crazy hardware synth.

Is this possible?

any sound card that has midi in/out.

You don't need to buy a soundcard though. YOu can get your favorite soundcard and then buy those $60 midi interfaces to hook up to the computer.

Or you could just buy midi to serial cables and hook up your sound module via a serial/game port
