Hi there guys!
I am new here, and just recently borrowed a JZ-3 microphone to try it on my girlfriend's vocals. We had been using a Studio Projects C1, previously, and we have both a daking preamp and a UA solo 610 preamp.
Expecting a MUCH better microphone, I plugged it in and was amazed to hear that the output volume is MUCH lower compared to all my other microphones. There are 2 options: either crank the preamp level to max (introducing a lot of noise), or record at normal preamp settings and normalize in logic later, which also introduces some, but not as much noise.
Overall, there is much more noise with this microphone than the C1 and others, and so much that it really seems almost unusable to me. What could be going on here? Is this normal, is this a defective mic, or are there other forces at work?
Really would like to be able to fairly compare the two, but so far that seems impossible... :-/
