i was thinkin about this in english today while i was dozing off. how would you go about recording a school's drumline?say maybe 5 snares a quad set of tenors and 4 basses?....... preferably with about 4-6 mics.

Santa Clara Vanguard does this for their DVD. Use 2 overheads for each section, with the cymbals standing behind the snare line.

nice. our school doesnt even have a winter drumline. just a thought lol thanks for replying tho if the drum section ever decides to record anything i'll tell 'em that

The Vanguard only uses 2 overheads? I would have thought they would use more....
nah, I think they probably use two overheads per sub-section (2 for snares and cymbals, 2 for tenors (quads), 2 for basses, totalling six)

I was an engineer at commercial studio

and what we did once with a pipe band was fly a pair of 87s (414s would be cool too) over the section, put another large diaphragm condenser below and behind (after finding the sweet spot) AND, for the extra touch, we put a sheet of wood on the floor behind the snares and we got a great crisp aggressive sound.

By the way, I am really happy to have found this site.
