Even though there are a lack of reviews of the robbie i went ahead and got it with a new dragonfly mic too. the local guitar center gave it to me for $899. it was between this and the Universal Audio M610 Tube Preamplifier which ive read that the m610 really colors your sound so i went with the Robbie. now the only thing i have to compare the robbie to is the built in focusrite pres in my mbox and i can definitely tell it sounds bigger and warmer than those.

did i make a mistake?? lol so far it sounds good to me.

I think you just answered your own question...!

If it sounds good, it is good.

Sounds Great. Guess I will have to pick one up soon as well.
I Like phrases like Bigger. :)

Seems you have made a wise purchase.

Which Dragonfly did you get?

I seriously doubt that a $1000 per channel pre from a reputable company like Blue could be anything but good.

Congrats on your new pre!

yeah cominginsecond. that was my reasoning behind the purchase. thanks:)

i ended up getting the dragonfly. ive heard and read so many good things about that mic.

Cool. I Love the Deluxe on Vocals. i Like the dragonfly on instruments.

There's no way it could be both, could it?

Hey Guys,

I've been sniffing around the Blue Robbie for a few days too (since I need a nice mix pre) and I've also been a little bummed out by the lack of reviews and use by folks. I guess it's a pretty new product so...

I wish pre amps and hi-ticket items had a 30 day return guarantee (without a restocking fee). I mean, how are you REALLY gonna know you like somehting unless you try it on your own rig? Especially in the $1000.00 range.

Anyone else used it?

If you are a serious buyer, try Mercenary Audio. http://www.mercenary.com/policies.html

They even have a special on the Speck mic pre ($700) 'til the end of December. They also sell the Great River ME-1NV ($1050) and the John Hardy M1 ($1050). Nothing against the Robbie, but if I wanted a single channel in the $1000 range, it would be one of these.

Apples and oranges. The Robbie is a tube pre...has a different sound. If one wants the sound of a tube, one is not going to find it in the Hardy or the GR...as good as both of those are...and they're very good.

I auditioned the Robbie when I bought my Dragonfly, and I LOVED the sound...very warm. But I bought a couple Wunder Audio PEQ-1s ( www.wunderaudio.com ) for my everyday stereo rig -- for some vintage Neve color. I'm now starting to go back to the tube decision...and the Robbie is definitely in consideration to cover that area. I did really like it...ugly as it is.

Also on the to do list, transparent and clean...but they'll have to wait a bit.

Sigh...

For me, it's apples and apples--different types of apples, perhaps, but they are all apples...er, preamps.

Not all tube pres sound the same. Not all solid state pres sound the same. There are clean and colored tube pres. There are clean and colored solid state pres.

The bottom line is, IMO, you don't buy a preamp because it has tubes in it; you buy a preamp because you want its color or lack thereof--because it sounds good with what you are recording.

Of course, when I upgraded I bought a Sebatron VMP2. :)

for that price you could have got a Sebatron with EQ and pads
The price for the dragonfly seems high unless its the deluxe??

The Similar Threads thing sucks...................................
I find myself wanting to post on some of them but they are all old.

Then if you do post on them someone will give you a red chicklet.
