I just went ahead and ordered reason 3 from studica.com ($280 Canadian with an academic licence). I'm really excited as it is just time for summer break and i'll have a new toy to master. If you havn't checked out reason, or if you havn't seen the new version, take a look at www.propellerheads.se Also check out the video totorial page to see what it can do, i'm super impresssed.

I'm mostly looking forward to its natural sounds, rather than its electronic ones. For the longest time i've wanted to record some of my band's songs but we didn't have the time, gear or talent to make it worth while. Now i can take my time and make a killer CD with the tons of sounds available. Specifially, i was extremely impressed with the drum kit refill. it has natural drum kits for the sampler that sound as good, IMHO as some BFD samples i have heard. Also the orkerster and pano samples will be sweet as well..

Does anybody else use reason here? any advice?

I couldn't possibly live without Reason. It's made so much of a difference with everything I do, and it sounds great.

I use it with Tracktion 1.6, which of course sucks balls compared to Power Tracks (hahahaha) and it gets the job done.

FYI, if you're a student, you can get the ReFills for $40 American from AcademicSuperstore.com.

I don't know if they allow Canadian buyers though, but it's worth it to ask; that seems pretty cheap.

cool, thanks for the tip. I'm really excited about the drum kit refill. they sound pretty dang good to me.

I'm a HUGE Reason fan and I use it with Tracktion too - how 'bout that?

You don't necessarily need to get refills if all you're looking for are acoustic-like drum sounds, because the redrum drum computer can be loaded one drum at a time with .wav files, then saved as a kit for future use. I have umpteen drum sample CD's from over the years and I've even forgotten the sources for some of my favorite custom kits.

If this is your first time as a Reason user, take your time to get to know all the machines in the virtual rack and what they can do. The Spider audio and control voltage/gate mergers are two I think few people bother with, but the creative possibilities they open up are numerous. Also, don't ignore the Matrix pattern sequencer for adding cv control to the Scream, Phase and other devices that have cv ins. Also, two Screams cascaded together are much more convincing than one, and more flexible too.

Oh yeah --- be sure you save your presets for the RV7000, Scream etc. I've got a folder named 'presets' with subfolders inside for the RV7000, Redrum, etc and even if it doen't wind up getting used on this song it might be just the thing for your next tune.

cool thanks for the pointers sss. keep em comin. oh yeah, check your PM :)

Yeah I've been using an Acid loops CD I bought from Sonic Foundry years ago, with drum one hits, and then just saving the kit in Reason. It works pretty damn well.

Reason is the $hit, and the best part is both Tracktion and Reason are pretty efficient, so I can run it on my less-than-state-of-the-art equipment.
