hey thanks Mixmkr, I will send the track as soon as I finish it.

about the other one, I threw that track away cos I dislike it now.
As long as I know that I need and will to get better, then one day I can conquer the music world.

On my headphones the reverb killed me, but on monitors it seemed to add to the polish.

:D :D

I must be old and dated. I thought the reverb was appropriate to the tune, which kicks major ass. We seem to be on an acoustic mission. I dig it.

hey mixmkr,

serious question for ya.... Do you 'normalize' your tunes? I'm thinking of buying one of those mastering things for my computer.. I dont record with the computer, but I figure I could at least use it to help the sound.. When I compare this song with the one I'm working on right now, it makes my mix sound dead and lifeless....kinda like me, but I dont want my mixes to reflect that......just the song itself..:D

Do you achieve the clarity with e.q.? or fancy shmantsy mastering software?? Is it worth it for me to buy mastering software, or is it proper e.q. and compression technique?

lets make with the tips dude! :D

thanks

B

This is a really good song.I like the cheesy wind chimes and bongos.:D I also share B. sabbaths desire to know how in the world you get your recordings to sound so polished and normalized. This has a glossier sheen to it than a lot of stuff on the shelves at the Local Record store.

btw/are those wind chimes a synth patch?

great job mixmkr........
GREAT mood.....Great! .....Post bong load relaxation on an evening Puerta Viarta beach...... aaahhhhhhh. I too thought the excess verb was appropriate. It enhanced that spanish feel a bit. And the bongos sound great. Wether or not the guitar sounds acoustic enough really isnt important.... it sounds great. The thin piezo tone that everyone mentioned kind of lends itself to the style of music. Great stuff. mike:)

Now that's soundscape,

Great work, very relaxed sounding all around.

Sounds like you got all the levels just right.

Now I listen again!!

Normally, I do not, and on this tune, I did not, nor run it thru any compression, or 'maximizers'. On occasions, I will run stuff thru the L1 ultramaximizer in the Waves bundle of plugins. It is pretty transparent to me, and does a very good job of raising overall levels up. I'll do that if I put stuff on CD's to hand out, or something along those lines. I wouldn't waste my $ on a TC finalizer, or anything like that...I personally don't think YOU need it. Nor a software program like T-Racks. I think you have the recording chops to be above their uses. However, I would suggest that you get more involved in the computer side of recording,(since you already have one...eh?!) as the editing and processing is far superior to anything I have ever compared it to and I think you'd be completely floored with what you can do. Suggestions with what to use would start a whole other thread however. I personally record and edit with Cooledit Pro, Soundforge XP, and have a bunch of DX pluggins that slam the whole thing home. I can't see needing much more at this point in time.

As far as the EQ issue, you asked about....I suppose since this tune has A LOT of synth stuff, and all direct in signals, that makes the chore of getting half decent sounds that much easier. I didn't fart around with mic'ing stuff and getting a "sound"...and the tune really mixed itself. Also, I pretty much took off any low pass filters on the reverbs, and that makes stuff 'sizzle' pretty much...although, I don't hear the sizzle as much as you claim there is....but then I think I'm about 20 years your senior, and my Marshall fatigued ears may make me boost the highs!!

Kramer...yes, the chimes are a Roland synth patch. Thanks for the comments too, btw.... as well as Track Rat's, Guernica's, and GT's....you guys have been very complimentory to me on this tune, and I appreciate the remarks. Gives me a :)

Just got to hear the tune

Wow...I am feeling like a serious newbie. Great song. And very smooth recording. Apologies if I am asking repeat questions, but I would love to know what type of gear you used/use for your recording.

ie what type of guitars/mics/pres/bass/ etc

thanks

jerod

Epiphone w/Bill Lawrence soundhole pickup/none/none/Roland gr33
.......the etc=Roland bongos, other sounds, voices, from a xp50 keyboard.

btw, Jerod Thanks for your repeated attempts. I appreciate your dilligence on your end, and lastly your comments.

My pleasure Mix

This is Week two on the bbs. I have already learned a shitload! Wow! The profanity has come out, i must be getting used to this.

I have a lot to learn and this is the most amazing forum. I look forward to getting to know everyone.

Mix, I understand the the song "mixed itself" as you went direct for most (All? "Mics: what are those?") but still it was really PRO.

I just got a VS 1880. What's your opinion on taking my mixes to MP3. I have a computer but can't seem to plug the 1880 into it. I have been cruising around the Roland forum and that may be more appropriate. but still would like info on how to "get it into the G@# D$%%% Computer.

great song and very cool guitar.

jerod

you got a nice mix going on there..hence your name.

Keep up the awsome work!
Sounds great

cool info!

L1 ultramaximizer sounds interesting. I may have to look into that.. After I finish reading my 'Windows XP for Dummies' book of course..:D

thanks

jerod....you just have to go in thru your soundcard into the computer.. thanks for the listen too, btw.

JMarcomb...thanks too...

oh...I see...you thank everyone that reviews...and you kinda inconspicously bump your own damn tune up to the top of the list again...

Isn't that a bunch of tripe??:D ;)

Hi Mixmkr,

Nice guitar playing and stuff, would be good background music for a video or an elevator or something. I can see now why you don't like my stuff, though, I think we're in completely different world's!

Ok. Here's the review. I hear some high-end hiss, that you should get rid of. The guitar playing is awesome. I like that sort of clean playing ála Mark Knopfler. The song is nice and spacious. You sure know how to make a nice ambient spacy wall of sound. It sounds like it would be a good Miami Vice soundtrack :) (you've listened to some Jan Hammer, if I remember correctly)

The song doesn't seem to go anywhere, but it serves its purpose nicely as a mood piece, or background music. You really should make some movie soundtracks or something.

So, shortly: Nice mood music and a great mix, apart from that hiss. And I don't mind the wind chimes or the bongos. I love those porn-sounding-bongos also :)

This is my first time visiting the clinic, and I must say, this is head and shoulders above the quality I would have expected to hear. I hope when I get my home studio set up I can approach this quality recording my brother and I.

Not only that, but I find this tune very tasteful for the style. You could put out a cd and I'd buy it. Very relaxing while keeping out of the realm of boredom. First rate!

How long did you say you spent on the project all together? You really should release something in this style. I'd buy it.

Here's an article someone wrote on releasing cd's for free through mp3.com
