I am very new to recording. I am basically trying to record an album and I don't know what all the settings mean. I am using a presonus firebox and unfortunately garageband. the volumn levels are low, but if i put the firebox volumn up, its scratchy and poppy. advice?

I think the new B1 has gain pad and bass rolloff switches. The gain pad is for using the mic on very loud sources (like drums) where the preamp might get overloaded. Not necessary for most voices. The bass rolloff will attenuate the lower frequencies. It may be useful for vocals to decrease proximity effect and/or ambient noise pickup. However, for starters, both of these switches should be in the off position. Make sure you engage the phantom power on the firebox after you connect the mic. Then, adjust the preamp gain so that you get a strong signal that is not clipping during loud parts. Good luck.
